This may be of interest:- Recently noted some 'Disco' clips drawn from TOTP studio I wasn't aware of. These include Middle of the road 'Soley soley' & T.Rex 'Telegram Sam'.
Apparently negatives of a number of TOTP films exist from Feb 70 to c.74. I glimpsed archive notes, hoping to find one I recalled of 'Witch queen of new orleans' (Redbone) showing Chislehurst caves. This wasn't on the notes, thus not there but 'Did you ever', a comedy country duet from '71 I recall was. It seems to be a stashed run with missing gaps here & there. I suspect the gaps may have appeared after items were loaned for other production use and not returned, or removed for personal interest reasons. One such re use I have been alerted to are childrens shows such as 'Ed & Zed' and 'Zokko'. These were supposed to have used items for 'Finchley central' (new Vaudeville band), 'Morning has broken' (Cat Stevens) and others which appear to be (otherwise missing) TOTP films.
Several B & W clips are circulating that may be from a source alleged to have taped in monochrome with a shibaden type recorder around 1973. The reported source included a Suzi Quatro track off air. These are thought to also include 'Cant get enough of your love' (Bad Co.) & one of Pans people dancing to 'Summer breeze' (the Isleys).
There are several clips possibly from those retrieved by record collectors Keith Badman. Of these 'teenage rampage' has a background similar to an alternative take of Muds 'Tiger feet' with the shows end titles & an off air BBC announcer. There is also a Pans people track. I wonder if these may come from one of the dance teams members of the same show, recorded at the time for their own records?
Keith has uncovered a number of clips inc. Hendrix 'Purple haze', Kinks 'Sunny afternoon' and Manfred Mann 'Ha ha said the clown'. There is also supposed to be a clip of 5.15. Rumours are that Pete Townsend may have had a copy made of the 500th TOTP show featuring this. A researcher must have had a copy of the segment as a clip was included in 'Kids are alright' film. Maybe it was taped onto a Philips cassette?
Recently a black & white copy of '7 seas of rhye' Queen has been circulating. This is reported to be an insert tape without DJs. I recall the track being featured in the 79-82 period, I'm sure on 'Pop quiz' along with 'Judy teen' (Cockney Rebel). This can't be verified as apparently some of the run was live. Mike Reid was later rumoured to collect pop tv, so I wondered if he had managed to obtain inserts for shows after they were used & subsequently junked?
P.S. The TOTP film for 'Merry Xmas war is over' was on that list (films) too. This is good news as the Xmas show pt 2 which featured it was wiped (unless it was live).
