Hi all.
I was looking through some old VT recordings of Apollo moon coverage the other day and one of the tapes I was looking at was an insert tape for the November 1970 edition of 'The Sky at Night'. This was the programme with the taped interview between Patrick Moore and Neil Armstrong.
The insert tape had a compilation of the Apollo 11 mission from the previous year and initially I thought it had all come from the raw satellite feed tapes which still exist. However, when a clip from the moment of the actual landing appeared, it had a static 'keyed' caption saying "Mission Control, Houston" which is not on the BBC satellite recording of the same... and then James Burke can be heard attempting to say "Touchdown" in studio crystal clear quality.
Clearly the PasB recordings did indeed exist at least up until November 1969, unless that spool was recorded for a previous 'Sky at Night'. In addition, a 1971 'Tomorrows World Special - One Small Step' features a section of film recording of the first step on the moon, with an electronic caption "Live from the surface of the moon" burnt into the film recording. I haven't been able to work out if this is a BBC film recording or from elsewhere. If anyone knows the whereabouts of any off screen stills of this coverage, I would like to see them.
Cheers,
Paul

Sometime during late (obviously) 69 Burke and Moore presented a Apollo landing prog especially for children.
This might explain the extra paraphernalia of captions and voice over ? IE to make it more understandable to a younger audience?
just an idea anyway

Correction!
I've made a terrible faux pas; the recording I was watching was actually a compilation edited for the actual coverage and was a mission compilation broadcast at the time. It does though include this short extract and is the only broadcast quality PasB material I have been able to find. The recording doesn't have a connection to the 'Sky at Night' programme at all.
Cheers,
Paul
