This is great news that another episode has been recovered, and a further episode that was incomplete is now complete in it's entirety again. It also sounds promising that a potentially better quality copy of 'The Phone' exists, than the already exisiting version that was recovered from a domestic recording back in 2001. All these recoveries are making my DVD boxset of the series look rather outdated.

At the last moment it's become a good year for vintage comedy.

It's good to know that episodes are still turning up.

These are amazing finds. easily In my top 5 most wanted. I can't believe this isn't being talked about more. After what felt like a few years of nothing, we have had some big hitters recently.

This is very welcome news. Just over 20 years ago, only 2 complete episodes of the first run existed in the archives.
Sadly, with the demise of Network, the chances of a commercial release on DVD are extremely remote. Hopefully BBC4 will show them at some point.

Anyone know why it took five years to make this happen? I am certainly not complaining, rather delighted in fact

I read that it took a long time as they were 405 line domestic format recordings. Playing them back sucessfully must have been difficult with not many machines available and possibly several tries to get good results. Then they would have to be converted electronically to 625 line. Not an easy task or quick overall.

I am surprised it can't be converted to a digital format from the tape then played on a computer (decoding the tape data). Perhaps there just isn't the need to write such software.

It's not a data tape. It's a video tape. Similarly, apparently you can't copy the 1s and 0s of a laserdisc, because it's a video signal, not data.

Didn't Kaleidoscope release a late-in-the-day Doctor Findlay find?

They have already confirmed they won't be doing a release of this, sadly. Didn't say why

Oh well, perhaps they will end up tagged as an extra on a DVD like the last one did with the film.

Oh well, perhaps they will end up tagged as an extra on a DVD like the last one did with the film. And the two Likely Lads episodes on that film's re-release. Hopefully, it's just Kal who said they won't be releasing it? I'd read it as any sort of disc release being ruled out. Hopefully, it is the former.
