Dear all, www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9KogX-WD2I This was the solitary release by the band Viv Prince formed after leaving The Pretty Things. There was only a UK release for this single (according to Discogs), so I'm assuming this is a UK TV appearance. I can't find where it's from, anyone out there know? Thanks in advance. |

I'm going to be even more unpopular than ever here, but, alas, I don't think it's UK TV.
Here's my reasoning....
It's mimed, same as the record - the 'miming ban' came into force in June 1966 and this single came out in August.
My first thought was it's a 'promo film insert', which was fairly common amongst the bands/management/record companies who could afford it.
The large band logo was a pretty rare thing for a 'new' group to have on British TV at the time
The group did appear extensively in West Germany at the time and ZDF retain some footage of them from this time period.
I do know the uploader acquired some of his material from European TV.
On their own, none of these would make for a compelling argument to say it's not British TV, but together.... I unfortunately think I have a case.
That said.... it's GREAT FOOTAGE!

Video isn't available anymore but it could easily be German, or, something recently found by a Dutch digital channel with good links to the archives. That's in general what's happened a few times these last few years.

Many thanks for your thoughts on this. Ray, I think you're right. There's a CD of them live in Cannes, May 1967, so it's not inconceivable that they popped into a local TV studio to plug the gig by doing a lip-synch clip. But West Germany could be the source. I wonder if that big sign behind them was theirs? Since the name of the band is stuck on the drumskin with glue suggests not.

The beginning and end of the 'At the Station' clip does suggest a promo film insert that perhaps may not ever have made it to TV. I'm not sure how long Viv Prince remained with the group - he doesn't appear to be the drummer on the Beat Club clips (September, 1966?) and he had joined Denny Laine's Electric String Band by the end of the year.

It’s an excellent clip.
I agree with what’s been said here already. It’s likely to be from a Dutch or West German pop show (or possibly a promo clip financed by the band’s management).
However, I couldn’t help wondering for a moment if this is a lost music insert from Granada’s ‘Scene at 6.30’? It looks like a ‘Scene’ performance to me. The band are in a tiny studio without a stage. There’s no sign of a presenter or audience.
It’s been mentioned already that ‘At The Station’ was released in the UK only so it would make more sense if it was performed on a British show. Of course, there’s the issue of the miming ban which came into force on British TV a couple of months before the single was released. I know that ‘Scene at 6.30’ sometimes featured artists promoting their records weeks or even months before the actual release date. Therefore, the clip could have been broadcast by Granada before the miming ban started.
I hope someone discovers the source of this clip soon.
