Apologies if this has been mentioned before by someone else, but I am wondering if now-missing programmes such as Doctor Who were screened for trainees on director/producer/engineer etc. in-house courses at the BBC as part of the teaching?
If so would new prints have been struck for these sessions, or a variety of clips compiled, even? Would they have been screened at any training centre other than the BBC? Would these training prints have been stored in a different place?
My feeling is that films would have been withdrawn from the film archive without any need to make copies? But anyway, a shot-in-the-dark suggestion. If anyone knows any more details about trainee-screenings (if any) please share, thank you.

I seem to recall, (If I Recall Correctly), that something similar happened, to what you are suggesting, by engineering.
"The Time Monster; Six" PAL 2" quad, was transferred to a low band black and white tape for training purposes. This tape led to the episode being recolored using the NTSC 2" Quad to make a superior PAL restoration by the Restoration Team.
I also believe a similar thing happened to the "Out of the Unknown" episode, "Little Black Bag".
I do not believe that any film prints were specially made for training purposes because of the expense. However, I do believe that some films that were returned from overseas sales were used in a training capacity. It could explain how some of the "Dalek Masterplan", and "Ice Warriors" were found outside of Enterprises.
Please someone correct me if I'm recollecting wrong here.

Thanks for your reply, Ralph. When I put my question to this forum the possibility of training films overseas didn't even come to mind! Another avenue of exploration?
At this late stage, it feels a bit like a case of a 'paucity of ideas' for considering other scenarios where copies of films or the original prints could have been utilised. In a recent Doctor Who Magazine article (I forget which) someone mentioned that they were exploring the possibilty of Doctor Who prints being used for Armed Forces entertainment - Naval vessels I think it was. Sorry I am on the train so can't dig out that issue! But at least that's a new avenue of exploration beig actively pursued.

He means old 16mm film recordings returned after foreign exploitation being used for training. There's no evidence of that though. Of the two he mentions, neither was used for training. The Ice Warriors were found at Villiers House and the old print of Episode 2 of The Daleks' Master Plan was used (along with other material) to test and calibrate the projectors in the viewing theatres at the BBC's Television Film Studios in Ealing.

Yes, I meant after their return. ... And I thought that I was misremembering something along those lines. Calibrating and testing sounds more like it. Thanks for the clarification.
