The modern trend of having a programme highlight at the beginning of the show. It INVARIABLY ruins the big reveal & makes watching the rest of the programme pretty much pointless.

What's Tony Hatch's phone number Peter ? I'm not sure if I've seen the post-Dennis Waterman Minders I must check out what you mean about the incidental music. Catweazle (unsuitable for children ?) why ? ... for goodness sake ! and as you say Murder, Rape, etc on the soaps the back of 7pm Even on the Crossroads theme Tony thumps that piano with passion. The new guy on Minder was a decent replacement (considering what he had to follow ) but oh that music track makes a once fun programme very dark IMHO. Catweazle - I think aging men are just regarded as scary these days? William

I never get troubled by Trick Or Treaters.. result!

Speaking of aged men (and/or women), I tried to watch an episode of New Hoo every few years, but the overwhelming impression was of frenetic bombast; that somebody, somewhere was very, very, pleased with himself.

There seems to be little originality in tv & film production these days - instead there is a depressing trend that its far easier just to raid the archives & remake classic tv series or films

The Paul McCartney at the BBC programme shown on BBC1 last night was disappointing in my view as it had the oh ! the viewers won't mind any old thing will do instead of careful research.
It would have been far better to forget the (At the BBC) aspect and therefore celebrate Paul's 80th birthday by including far more highlights from his career not only on the BBC.
Also it was'nt even in chronological order it was all over the place.
If ever there was a chance to really show some of the rarer stuff from TV archives this was the chance but of course the BBC probably did'nt want to properly budget the programme to include proper research or pay for the use of rarer material ?
Just my opinion ... anybody out there watch this last night ?

Did the Paul McCartney thing have stupid captions with "interesting" "facts" in the middle of every song? An annoying thing invented by ITV's The Chart Show in the 80's which can now be seen in every BBC music show. Unnecessary and annoying.

I have long since given up on the BBC doing careful research for such programmes. For a modern show to praise I am just watching the Disney+ Beatles documentary Get Back. I have no idea how they change 50 year old film into sharp digital like images to make it seem that the 20 something Fab Four are currently working on their latest album. Despite the clear tensions within the band the creativity is amazing culminating in the famous rooftop concert.

Far too many trailers - particularly on the BBC. And whatever happened to the news headlines at the start of the bulletin? Now you get a headline followed by a 20 second quote - more so on ITV. I sometimes feel I heard enough and don't need to sit through the broadcast. This `previewing' has been happening in documentaries for a few years now when you get the highlights at the start followed by the production - basically a trailer within the programme itself. When I mentioned this to one producer as my pet hate he said this style of opening fact based programmes was expected to be phased out and that he had been under pressure on a previous documentary series of his to do just that but he stuck to his guns allowing a couple of minutes more archive footage to be included. I agree about the trailers Ronnie and that's interesting in what you say about your chat to a producer about 'previewing' Re the news headlines, I hate the (boom boom sound on the BBC between them telling you what's coming up on tonight's news) just get on with telling us the news ! also the fact that the TV news lasts for a set time. I'd rather that the news could be 5 mins or 10 mins or 40 mins depending on what's happening but no; because it's a set time so they need to include non news stories and introduce their spin into the proceedings.

I think the issue was William that - as with all productions - it will go through several edits before meeting the required 59 minutes or whatever. This obviously means material they would have like to have kept is reluctantly cut. Then having reached the magic figure to be told to insert a `preview'at the expense of more material was annoying but he fought and won his case. Re the news - if News at Ten still had its bongs after each headline today it would be around 10.10 before we got started! Hope you caught The Lost Final last night.
