This is just for fun
What do you find either annoying or to be fair good about contemporary TV programmes ?
The most annoying point (at the moment) for myself are the TV adverts (They are all so formulaic) and actually a tad infantile.
There is hardly 1 advert that dares to break the pattern ...
The reason it's bugging me so much at the moment is that the fast forward on my remote is not working ! ...
The good point about contemporary TV for myself are the scientific programmes by the likes of Brian Cox (There's one about Mars on tonight) so feet up and cuppa for me.
How about you ?

As someone who doesn't watch contemporary TV ("We don't eat the bread of today" as they say at Hancock's reunion) I'd say the worst thing about it is "Because it's there"
Best thing? That I don't have to watch it.

Best: There are some fantastic police/crime dramas.
Worse: Lack of pop/rock music shows!

What I find the most annoying aspect of contemporary programmes, whether they're factual or fiction, is that they have too much music throughout. If I hear a %@*!&$ piano (or that over-used pizzicato string music) once more I won't be responsible for my actions! I don't need a melancholy melody to tell me how my emotions should be reacting to what's being shown. Why not have silence when there's no narration, or just the ambient sounds? I watched some of BBC's archive documentaries on i-Player recently, one was in the Man Alive series, about Hyde Park (from 1971, and very good, btw) and another similar one, and neither had any incidental music apart from the intro and outro themes and were all the better for it.

The good thing about contemporary TV is that I can Sky plus it all & rush through all adverts & cretinous "expert analysis" on sports.

It annoys me that live sport can still cause the next show to be postponed or cancelled. In this day and age with so many channels there should be a more elegant way of dealing with it.

Well said Kev ! ... as far as I'm concerned you have hit the nail on the head ! ... I also cannot stand the b****y piano etc over I would say nearly every programme no matter what channel. The powers that be must think that we cannot possibly enjoy a programme without this bleep bleep sodding infuriating tinkling in the background. I must seek out the Man Alive Hyde Park episode to see what sanity should look like. P.S. I'm glad I am not the only person that hates the background c**p Cheers

I have noticed that every documentary has to have a drone shot that gets repeated many times throughout the programme. Many dramas do it as well.

Most modern shows have hip directors who cant resist jump cuts or sudden changes every 15 seconds. Its a sad reflection on life today that many people have less attention span than a geriatiric goldfish.
I work in a school & one of the teachers was complaining recently that the kids cant watch a full length documentaries now. He has one about 9/11 which has been used in class to illustrate a particular topic. Nowadays the kids get bored after 5 minutes - in the past they were engrossed in it.

I got through a few minutes of Game of Thrones on DVD recently. One of those dopey CGI snow-flurries, with each pixel-flake choreographed in a way that the old-fashioned styrofoam wasn't. God, it was crap. (Not TV, but, I've just been watching The Darkest Hour, where dozens of teeny-weeny CGI boats set out to rescue the British Army from Dunkirk. Totally unconvincing; in fact a prattish depiction of the Excursion to Hell: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhNhUFQNYbQ ).

Far too many trailers - particularly on the BBC. And whatever happened to the news headlines at the start of the bulletin? Now you get a headline followed by a 20 second quote - more so on ITV. I sometimes feel I heard enough and don't need to sit through the broadcast. This `previewing' has been happening in documentaries for a few years now when you get the highlights at the start followed by the production - basically a trailer within the programme itself. When I mentioned this to one producer as my pet hate he said this style of opening fact based programmes was expected to be phased out and that he had been under pressure on a previous documentary series of his to do just that but he stuck to his guns allowing a couple of minutes more archive footage to be included.

Best: There are some fantastic police/crime dramas. Worse: Lack of pop/rock music shows! Best Police dramas in the last couple of decades (in my opinion are LIFE ON MARS and LINE OF DUTY) mind you I have'nt watched them all so I might have missed others that are good ? Regarding lack of Pop shows I totally agree with you Peter. Oh for a modern day equivalent of the OGWT ! that concentrated on real music not the mainstream garbage you hear these days.

I personally think the post-Dennis Waterman Minders were ruined with the depressing incidental music track. This is where we are today...TPTV show 'Catweazle' with a warning that it is unsuitable for young children... ..meanwhile at 7pm every sin, malady and hell on earth is going on in those soaps and young minds are watching it.. .

What's Tony Hatch's phone number Peter ? I'm not sure if I've seen the post-Dennis Waterman Minders I must check out what you mean about the incidental music. Catweazle (unsuitable for children ?) why ? ... for goodness sake ! and as you say Murder, Rape, etc on the soaps the back of 7pm
