I was reading the Bald Explorer Forum that a sequel to The Titfield Thunderbolt was made called Return of the Titfield Thunderbolt only all the negatives were lost in a fire at the time during editing,.
Could it be true that absolutely nothing scurvies of this?

Never heard about this before. If they were editing it the negatives would be at the lab and there would be a work print wherever they were editing. So a workprint might still exist.

I was taken in. Drat. Has this ever happened though? There certainly have been films lost to fire. A fire in 1937 wiped out the only copies of many films, including most of Theda Bara's carreer.

Lots of fires. The camera negatives of many films including Singin' In the Rain were lost in a fire in the 1970s and in the 1990s the camera negatives of several Ealing comedies were destroyed: The Lavender Hill Mob, Whisky Galore and Passport to Pimlico. Some idiot decided to have these all at a lab at the same time.
Although duplicates made on film exist they never have the sharpness of the original camera negative and have slightly more contrast.
It's tragic that these films didn't survive long enough for digital copies to made from the camera negatives.
I was just reading about the restoration of The Guns of Navarone, which has always looked terrible on TV. Apparently some short sections cut in with the camera negative are third generation for some reason. You can see all sorts of weird things if you keep your eyes open. For example in Carry On Girls when Barbara Windsor first walks into the hotel a very poor quality duplicate section has been cut in. Maybe because the negative was damaged at some point.

There was another archive fire which destroyed a lot of the RKO masters, including the original reels for Citizen Kane.
I think it was the MGM vault in Culver City, but I've also heard it was another New Jersey archive.

Also the library of Mancunian Films was destroyed in a fire at Kay film labs.
