Interesting stuff! One point that most of us here would know is untrue is the statement that most TOTP episodes were saved from 1973 onwards - it wasn't until April 1976 that they semi-regularly started saving everything.

Over a couple decades of virtual collecting I have many files of BBC recordings that will likely never see proper release; either because the artists are considered too obscure for a commercial release, or the only thing available is someone at home's off air recording with fades and interference. I keep hoping for better and more complete collections, and once in awhile they materialize... if Fairport and The Idle Race can have entire discs of BBC recordings, and Barkley James Harvest, Honeybus and The Move get multiple bonus tracks of them, maybe there is still hope for a fuller sampling of later Eclection with Dorris Henderson, maybe even their Colour Me Pop tv appearances?
Loved all those 'Top Sounds' LPs with BBC radio and tv performances, wish there could be a dozen more volumes like those!

Thanks for sharing, that was an interesting read.
Tragic to hear that things were still going missing/being misfiled well into the 90’s!

Interestingly, Eclection were the only group to appear on Colour Me Pop twice: an in the studio edition in June 1968, and later that year in a 29th September recorded (but November broadcast) live segment (alongside Spooky Tooth and Jethro Tull) from Fairfield Halls Croydon. The June 68 studio edition definitely featured the original group with Kerrilee Male on female vocals: although not sure about the later live one and if Dorris Henderson had come on board by then or not. Speaking of Colour Me Pop (my monomaniac interest haha!) it's a fantastic article but it does include a few niggling omissions and oversights: for instance, the full Zappa Line Night Line Up session which the author claims went missing in the 90s and is as hopelessly gone as Rosebud, is well known to fans and has been posted in full on Youtube repeatedly (often mis-labelled as being from Colour Me Pop: an error that originated with it's billing on Sounds Of The Sixties)

Of course, the Zappa clip isn't the only time the BBC have got it wrong. The caption on this clip from TOTP2 claims it is from 'Cilla', despite the fact that Clodagh Rodgers never appeared on the show (it is actually from 'Dee Time'!).

Some howlers in that piece; especially the total bollocks about Biddy and the elephant clip. Show was pre recorded so she could easily have blocked it. And indeed she showed the clip dozens of times over the following years. Ho hum!
