Unfortunately, it seems that this technology only works with facial movements for now, so there's still quite a way to go before we can properly animate tele-snaps.

Thought the Peter Butterworth deep fake was particularly good.

I think we're getting quite close to the day when we can re-create a missing episode using a combination of re-filming and deep-faking close-ups.
Perhaps as a fan-endeavour too.

I agree, Richard. This is amazing stuff. It also seems to answer all of my objections to animation. I've disliked animation for the lack of human expression. (How many times have we heard how expressive Troughton's facial movements were, and then be confronted with a wooden-faced animation!) These deep fakes seem to have conquered that problem (at least, for me).

Wow, so good. I wonder how much it costs to do.It would work on certain scenes.. I'm thinking the 1st doctors speech at the end of the massacre

It does not cost anything, just act/speak and the software will switch the faces. You'd have to dress in the right clothes if you wanted to do a whole scene & have a green screen or similar behind you to put in the correct set.

Astounding.....Imagine what a few more years could accomplish..? the Dalek clip is exceedingly good..it would be hard for someone that didnt know it was missing not to realise it wasnt a genuine clip. Im seriously impressed .

Technology is improving all the time - and the price is reducing 👍

Richard A year ago I would have said it's still a long way off - but looking at how convincing those clips are, I think we'll see reconstructions a lot sooner. It also goes to show the importance of both the tele-snaps and the audio recordings. It will never be a 100% recreation of the original but I think that, in time, we'll see reconstructions that are very close to capturing the general feel of the original. As someone already pointed out, this is free technology which anyone can use.

I've been wanting to try something like this with the UCL Mission to the Unknown and footage of the actors from other projects.

It's something a local theatre group or school drama club could do. Someone will within the next year and it'll look real.
