Hiya. Does anyone remember a brief run of a children's series fronted on Saturday Mornings by Duggie Brown from 1979? Called The Mersey Pirate', it's one I watched at the time and it's listed as still being in the archives - yet, it's never been repeated in any form on any compilation programme, or the like. I've completely forgotten how the theme tune went, but I do recall there was Frank Carson & Jeremy Beadle in it. Any help or links to any recordings would be appreciated. Regards Chris

Chris Nor never likely to be, I imagine. It has little merit and 'Scully and Mooey' (early Alan Bleasdale characters) were stereotypical scouse loveable rogues. As an Everton supporting non rogue scouser, I found it a bit of a pain. TISWAS it wasn't.......

Was Mersey Pirate the one that had a character called something like "Mr Nasty" with the catchphrase "Horrible!" or am I thinking of another show? I remember kids being urged to send in really horrible things through the post, and the Post Office didn't like it when kids started sending badly wrapped old fish and the like. If that's the show then I quite liked it.

Are you sure Beadle was in that? He was in Fun factory, along with Billy Butler and Therese Birch, which took Mersey Pirate's slot the following summer. I do recall Anita Ward, who was currently no 1 with ring my bell, being on Mersey Pirate. (Then of course there was also Bill Oddie's Saturday Banana. None of course a patch on Tiswas, which they replaced for the summer)

the run of Granada's "Mersey pirate" was severely butchered by the long ITV strike of 1979. I wish I was around then to watch it. 3 months of no Coronation Street or Emmerdale! Bliss!!!

Ah thanks! Fun Factory! That's the show I was thinking of in my previous post.

Wasn't "The Mersey Pirate" set aboard one of the river ferries, "The Royal Iris" I think, and they did the show under a glass dome. Seem to remember Bill Oddie and Billy Butler were on it too.

Hi. Thanks for all your feedback. Just goes to show how much I hadn't remembered. Yes, Jeremy Beadle was in 'Fun Factory' a year later. Can't recall much about the show's content, but, yes, it was set upon a ship which sailed up and down the Mersey during transmission. I do remember Anita Ward and also a film clip of the Undertones recording Teenage Kicks in the recording studio. Taking on board various issues of taste in previous threads, it would still be great to see at least a minute of the show, if only to refresh the mind! No, it wasn't a patch on Tiswas, but why try and copy something which couldn't be copied? Regards Chris

Clips appeared on a Granada only retrospective of Kids tv about 2 years ago.
