I was part of the discussion on this on Twitter and was told by no less than Stephen James Walker that the Lost in Time DVD used the studio-only soundtrack by mistake. Judging by the clips posted, the dialogue actually sounds clearer without the additional sound effects!

Mark Ayers did a pretty good job clearing them up for the CD releases. Its been a long time since I played the audio of that story but its a slow story with out the visuals that is for sure. The soundtrack of the audio is still pretty awful. That was the first thing I noticed about it when I first listened to it a couple of years ago.Certainly nowhere near the more pristine soundtracks of other stories. The soundtrack for say,the Web of Fear and Power of the Daleks are incredible. So much so that they didn't need animations for their missing episodes in my opinion, the narrative is easy to follow and immediate.

And the BBC Radio Collection audio release on CD also, bizarrely, used the same source as the VHS version. So there has never been a release of the as-broadcast version with the sound effects.

After Wheel in Space, he didn't have any further non-missing episodes (or before Daleks' Master Plan?)

I remember from a DWM article there was another home recorder who managed an almost complete run from Inside The Spaceship to sometime into the Pertwee era, but the recordings weren't as good as Graham Strong's.

Saying that,I'm listening to The Space Pirates audio on an a more recent Panasonic DVD player and the soundtrack is a lot clearer-almost as if the actual episodes exist. At the moment, episode 1 is remarkably clear and resonant.

I belong to some old-time radio groups, which preserve both British and American radio shows. Audio processing by computer software has taken some big strides in recent years.
A record industry engineer has been developing the means to process some pretty duff audio recordings from the 1960s of pop music tracks recorded by well known pop groups, but after the processing these tracks no longer sound duff. Amazing things can now be done to improve the sound quality of an audio track.
In the fullness of time, this type of audio enhancement technology will filter down to our level. The Space Pirates soundtrack could be made to sound a good deal better, just by audio filtering and enhancement of the existing recordings.
But, it is not correct to say we can't now hear the original tv soundtrack. Not on the DVD that accidentally had the wrong sound track. But there is a decent quality Australian tape recording from a tv repeat in Oz, a well known recording, that obviously has the complete soundtrack with the sound effects.

If I recall they didn't playback the entire tape when they had the chance, and it's unlikely that tape could even be played back now. Actually, I have the tape and it's still perfectly playable. Paul

Paul If I remember rightly, the Loose Cannon introduction to The Space Pirates showed an excerpt of the tape, right? It looked pretty clean, from what I remember. It's just the 35mm print still looked better.
