I've heard that the surviving Episode 2 of The Space Pirates has only been released with an unfinished sound mix in every home media release, including audio. Is this true?

Well considering off air recording of episode 2 exist I find it surprising that in this day in age it would be released in complete.

They have multiple off air recordings of all 6 episodes of "The Space Pirates" had the BBC used a copy with out the proper Sound Effects on the audio release of the DVD we would have known about it by now

The Space Pirates has pretty poor audio if I remember, nothing on par with what was on the Lost In Time Boxset.

Mark Ayers did a pretty good job clearing them up for the CD releases. Its been a long time since I played the audio of that story but its a slow story with out the visuals that is for sure.

Indeed, although the audio came from the same source as The Invasion, which wasn't very good in terms of quality. Nothing comparable to the 35mm mag.

I thought that the VHS release used the comp/opt track which was incomplete not the 35mm mag track and the latter had been used on the DVD, but I could be wrong, it was a long time ago.

The audio used on the 2nd LC recon of Space Pirates was noticeably better & clearer than the BBC CD. I assume they had a better source than the BBC had ? Or maybe remastering technology had improved (?) (the BBC CD was released some years before the 2nd LC recon)

The BBC CD of SP had the worst sound quality of the entire lost episodes CD series, if I recall right. It was only after seeing the 2nd LC recon that I really felt I'd properly heard the SP audio.

AFAIK, all the commercial releases of the episode have the correct soundtrack on them.
What you are probably thinking of are the 'bootleg' VHS copies of part 2 that were circulating within fandom in the 1980s, which AIUI some were missing the broadcast sound because those copies had been taken off a print taken from the original 35mm neg, which had only the raw studio sound on it.

I am sure if an when The Space Pirates gets the animation treatment they will clean up the sound track even more. Been a long time since I have given this one a listen.

The audio to the Space Pirates is quite poor and Mark Ayres has stated at a convention that he's never been able to come across a good audio soundtrack for it yet.Is it possible that the original transmission had a poor soundtrack anyway?

There's a comparison here between the complete off-air and the released, unfinished versions.

So the sample suggests to me is that the 35 mag (on every official release) is the studio recording sound (with the rocket sound played at the same time?) but there must have been a further component containing the remaining sound effects (or maybe the door sound was a late inclusion to beef up those scenes) which was added after the session before the transmission master was finalised. Correct?
