Does anyone know anything about the recent find by the BFI of Crossroads episodes, apparently most episodes from the 70s have been recovered and are in the process of being restored by them.

Yes, i'm most keen to know more about this too! This was apparently reported as fact here not long agp but there has been no follow-up. We can but hope. Can the person who reported this provide any more confirmation if they are reading this?

I dont think the Crossroads archive has ever actually been lost. The best people to contact are the Crossroads fan club who i believe said at one time they could account for (give or take a few) every episode. They should know! they are quite obsessive about their subject.
Sorry i have no details of how to contact them

They can't all be around. A lot of the ATV b/w ones (including the first) were literally burnt to a crisp! (in an accidental fire).

The Kal guides have always listed most 1970s eps as existing. I saw the paperwork at the BFI over the Summer and spotted no great extra additions. There might be a handful once I've sorted out all the paperwork and double-checked but no mythical pile of Quad 405 line tapes. I do have VTR numbers for all eps from 1967 onwards if any are held in private hands that people want to check.

The Kal guide I have only lists no more than a dozen or so episodes from each year from the early '70s!! So are we now saying that they mostly exist? I'm confused!
I'd never heard anything before of a fire destoying the b/w eps! When did this happen and what (very roughly) was lost - Crossroards and otherwise?

The Fan Club and the Appreciation Society would be very grateful if anyone does have any information. Its one of the questions we get asked about the most.
In 1994 when the Appreciation Society had access to Central's Vault it appeared back then that huge amounts (before 1978) were missing.
All the episodes however are kept in script format (or were at the Central/ATV Centre)
All information is welcome mike@thecrossroadsfanclub.com

Its the format of the early books that confuses people re Crossroads - the dates listed are recording dates/vtr numbers and normally 2 eps were made on the same VTR number so you can double the amount you see on the page. The Central/ATV tapes have now been combined and all have been sent for trnasferring. Like I said, nothing particularly special seems to have turned up. The BFI are now trying to match tx dates to the recording dates and then we will have a clearer picture if any extra eps have turned up. But I have seen no pre 1974 dates yet, though the project is still ongoing of course, and there are odd earlier exampels surviving. Hope that helps. I'm back at Carlton next week so I'll see if they have a printout of the exact holdings.

Its not exactly episodes (well it is but there is more than that!) but I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me about Crossroads.
I heard from Carlton that they episodes have now all been moved. However they were unable to say where and they have also said the archive is now not able to be reached easily. Anyone know why.
I've also heard that the music ie. the theme tunes and incidental music is missing. I know the Appreciation Society were looking for copies of it for a 40th CD and Carlton said the master sources were destroyed in 1996.
I'm not sure how true this is as the BBC and more recently (17/07/04) Channel 4 have used the original television version of the theme tune which is not the version released in 1965.
CAS told me that they were made aware that the music was saved by someone at Granada in 1996, however their records as to who were missing. They believe that the music does exsist as the same person posted a link to the incidental sad theme and break themes online at one point.
Why would Granada save the Crossroads music? And does anyone know where the copies are or who has them as well the profits from the CD were to go to the Crossroads Caring for Carers charity - which is a good cause!
Also does anyone know yet on average how many episodes have been listed?

I recently obtained a copy of the original Crossroads Theme. It's not the Pye Records single release, which has cropped up on almost every TV Themes CD release since the Mid 90s, either! It was actually released as a B side, in 1987, to a song that tied in with a storyline.
Looking at the recording credits, it was "(P) 1964 BMG Music" - so this recording was never an ATV copyright track at all - which may suggest why it was re-recorded for single release by Pye a couple of years later (Pye was at that time owned by ATV).
In theory if ATV/Central/Carlton have destroyed *their* masters, the originals will still be somewhere within BMG.
The track begins with the opening bar as on TV, but mixes rather unsubtly into the ending theme melody (beat perfect, but you can tell the difference) which repeats for the 3 minute duration.
I'll try and find the A side's name and record number if anyone's interested.
Lee.

Wow, you guys know your stuff alright! Fantastic news - I had feared they'd been binned a long time ago.
To be honest Crossroads fans are sick of hearing the pye single. But Noele Gordon states in her book that the main TV version was only 1 minute 20 seconds so that makes sense for the 1987 loop.
