Dear all,
If you saw 'The One Show' featuring Philip Morris, you'll know that he has announced the recovery of the following material:
The Morecambe and Wise Show - Series 1 Episode 5 TX: 30/09/1968 The Morecambe and Wise Show - Series 1 Episode 7 TX: 14/10/1968 Steptoe and Son - My Old Man's a Tory TX: 08/11/1965 The Basil Brush Show - Series 1 Episode 3 TX: 28/06/1968
He also announced the recovery of an edition of 'The Rag Trade'. I know what the episode is, but I won't be able to physically inspect the film until next week, so I'll confirm then which edition it is. However, I can confirm that it is a series 3 episode.
There is other material as part of this return which the BBC have yet to announce.
Regarding the condition of the material, I personally inspected some of these films earlier this week, and performed repairs and film prep for the purposes of the film transfer, which I also supervised. Thus far, the films are intact with some signs of wear, but nothing that would pose any issue for further screenings.
With regards,
Paul

I thought that all Steptoes already existed in one format or another?

I thought that all Steptoes already existed in one format or another? Yes. They do. But the surviving copy of 'My Old Man's a Tory' is a camera copy of a 405 line domestic format recording. It has a hum bar going up the screen. It's very poor. I'll be able to give a full assessment of this new 16mm print next week. Paul

Paul, was all this material found in Sierra Leone or just the M&W episode?

Paul, was all this material found in Sierra Leone or just the M&W episode? Well I would be surprised if everything I have seen came from the same location. I don't know for sure; it's not a question I have asked. Paul

It's marvelous to learn of these additional recoveries made by T.I.E.A. Congratulations to Phil Morris and everyone involved with this find! And I see that Phil Morris has just tweeted "Morecambe and wise 2 lost editions plus lots more to be revealed." So ... Lots more congratulations!

What smelt worse the Doctor Who returns or these? Also, any cuts appear in the films apart from those made for commercial brakes?

Oh superb! The M&W clip on the One Show looked like it had chroma dots too.
I never liked Steptoe but checked out the episode as a technical curiosity. Good news for fans of that as the domestic recording is awful!

What did they smell like? What smelt worse the Doctor Who returns or these? Also, any cuts appear in the films apart from those made for commercial brakes? I haven't really got a comment to make about the smell. Each of the Morecambe and Wise films had a few cement splices, probably made by BBC Enterprises to remove FR off-locks. We're talking about a frame or two at the cut point that's missing, but nothing we can't resolve for a future screening. In the Basil Brush episode, the trickiest issue was a tape splice in the middle of the Ritani performance. Nothing appears to be missing. There is a small amount of tramline scratching to the left of frame, nothing serious apart from one scratch that extends for about 35 feet and is right through the emulsion. However, it's during Rodney Bewes reading the story at the end and is fairly static so could be digitally repaired if required. During the transfer, we were able to resolve colour subcarrier chroma dots on both Morecambe and Wise episodes, and this morning I successfully decoded these for a full colour recovery of a short section. With a transfer tailored for colour recovery, I believe that we will be able to achieve very good results for them both. Paul

What fantastic news. I've just watched the relevant part of the One Show & Phil seems to be saying that he's located copies of ALL of the monochrome Steptoes that were previously only available as copies sourced from the 405-line domestic recordings.
He then says now he will be looking for better copies of those colour Steptoes which at the moment are only available from inferior sources ( less of those thankfully than there were of the low grade monochromes, if memory serves ).
The exact quote (at about 24:45 in) is :
"I've completed the 1960s run of Steptoe & Son; now that's all in it's original format. I've got to do the colour episodes, which I'm kind of working on recovering now".
Which sounds fairly definitive in terms of recovering better format versions of the monochromes. When he says "original format"; I think ( maybe wrongly ) that Steptoe was originally recorded onto videotape during studio recording, so if it was, I guess he probably means film recordings of these rather than the actual original in-studio tapes ( though who knows! ).
