I was on The Destruction of Time blog recently looking at the censor footage and it says for the Massacre episode 4: "Reduce or delete views of massacre, particularly detailed views of killings." Having not seen the original broadcast, did you actually see mobs hunting down and killing people or was it more like the Loose Cannon Reconstruction with a painting of the Massacre?

The massacre itself was shown as per the Loose Cannon recon - with a series of illustrations from the British Museum. The script itself indicates that this was a 1' 20" sequence, described as "Montage of prints of the Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve".

I do find it funny though that New Zealand censored a painting.

The editing of the prints just seems really strange to me. Isn't part of the point of the story that, no matter how bad the history was, the Doctor felt compelled to allow a (probably) original victim of the massacres to remain a victim?
I must have just got used to the exceptions to the Hays Code because when the movies were historical or portrayed war. In general, violence was as forbidden as profanity and sexuality -- except for historical accuracy and for war stories because the accurate portrayal of these kinds of incidents was considered important.

Addendum: Loose Cannon made some nice videos about The Massacre that are hosted in David Weston (played Nicholas Muss). All of the Loose Cannon extras are very good.
