I read somewhere it was common in the 1960s-70s for American variety shows to use inserts of acts not available to appear in the main studio shoot.
Often these would be a musical or comedy act, & sometimes using footage from another show carefully edited in.
I wonder if any performances have survived by being used in this way.

I know of one example of a Marty Feldman sketch performed on a Dean Martin show with its original UK filmed insert. Trouble is, hard to find any concrete evidence, archive catalog, or other information for older US shows.

Red Skelton used British invasions bands like the Kinks and Stones and at least two of these exist, maybe more.
Hullaballoo has Brian Epstein showing British acts, filmed in London. they survive too.

Mark Evanier has mentioned on his site that Red Skelton's show would include British acts as inserts, but I couldn't find the posting.

Trouble is, hard to find any concrete evidence, archive catalog, or other information for older US shows. It also doesn't help that, in order to figure out where the inserts came from, you'd need to find the program paperwork- and, in the United States, that's a rather difficult task, as much of that material is still held in private hands and is not easy for researchers to access.
