I am curious about a couple of edits that were made in Part Six for the video release. (Once upon a time, I was at a Con where JNT brought Shada.)
1. When Clare Keightly burns her hand, there was a short bit inserted before the force field being projected from Professor Chronotis's room collapses. When Romana is trying to reach a pencil, Clare lets go of her control and says, "I'll get it." That was not in the original version I saw.
2. After Skagra has been put into his cell, Ship tells him that she will extol the virtues of The Doctor. While he breaks down, Ship says, "Let me tell you from the beginning." That was in the original but not on the video release.
I strongly prefer the original edit.

The photo of Tom with that scarf and costume, looking splendid with white hair........it brought a big smile to my face and the barest hint of a tear to my eye.

Two musings:
If the Ian Levine animation managed to do very visually accurate depictions of the lead characters; why can't this official BBC version - with all the resources & connections the BBC has - get this right also ?
I haven't seen the I.L. Shada but saw the comparative images of that to the new one in an online article ( in Radio Times I think ).
I wonder, as the new version seems to be in feature format; will there be an additional episodic version included on DVD/Blu-ray ? ( either with or without the newly filmed Tom Baker live action scene ).
And if not; what's the likelihood of a 'special edition' type release in the future, with a 6-part episodic version included ?
If there is no 6-part version now or later, combined with the limited visual accuracy of the characters, it would then seem the BBC is not too bothered about providing a version as close as possible to how it might have appeared, if completed at the time of original production ( allowing for the fact it is part animated - ie I accept that animation is part of it & have no intrinsic problem with that ).

my general thoughts about the new one is it is an edited version of shada. ie they filmed as much as they could with the living characters, so the parts of those who were dead were either lifted from existing episodes or edited out.-no sound alikes. The two primary characters who are dead are k9 and the professor.
IL decided to go a different direction. to be more complete and to be faithful to the script which included sound alikes. IL did not have the resources of most of the original cast like Tom baker. Also, my thoughts are that much of the facial animation is tracing the various actors reading their lines. where with IL the animation is fully hand/computer animated.
Different techniques. I personally would have loved the professor and k9 replaced. i wouldnt have cared if all of k9 was replaced by john leeson, who to me is the definitive k9. but he did it as he did it. and it still holds up great and while certain scenes are edited out, there is enough there to make an enjoyable story.
