Hi there,
I'm asking for a member of the music group The Orange Bicycle who I've been in touch with recently, who has asked me if the appearance they made on Candid Camera in around 1968/9 might still exist. I was unaware that the UK Candid Camera featured musical guests, can anyone confirm if this is correct. If so, does anyone know what the survival rate is like for the show, and what the chances of a 68/69 edition surviving might be?

On Candid Camera's web page they offer custom dvds of past shows. I would start by reaching out to them to find out if they own the uk editions or who would. www.candidcamera.com/cc8/cc8.htmlhappy hunting!

I did an internet search and it looks like the original UK Candid Camera TV series ran between 1960 and 1967?
Then came back in 1976? if that's the case then Orange Bicycle could'nt have been on the show in 1968 or 1969

I wasn’t aware that “Candid Camera” featured musical guests. However, I found the following about Orange Bicycle on the November 1967 page of the “Marmalade Skies” website.
Laura’s Garden: During the rehearsal for this number, everything went wrong for the group - they didn't know they were on Candid Camera at the time! But the finished product is fine - a colourful rhythmic ballad, with ear catching harmonies and fugal influences.
I think Anglia was the only ITV company broadcasting “Candid Camera” in late 1967, but other regions would have shown the episode featuring Orange Bicycle on various dates in 1968. The “Lost Shows” database doesn’t refer to any editions of “Candid Camera” from 1967 or 1968, so I don’t know if they exist or not.

Orange Bicycle recorded some really sublime singles and received plenty of radio airplay but were one of those bands that inexplicably never made the charts. Well worth checking out the CD compilation issued a few years ago if you have more than a passing interest in the late 60s UK pop scene.
Reading the Marmalade Skies quote above I take it to mean that the band were victims of a Candid Camera stunt rather than being engaged to perform a straight guest spot on the show. I guess 'During rehearsals' could either mean as they prepared to tape the 'Laura's Garden' single in the studio with record producer Monty Babson- or as they were gearing up for a performance in a tv studio. It's a bit ambiguous. Maybe the Orange Bicycle member concerned could shed some more light on it?
I don't think the Candid Camera series format allowed for regular musical guests, although I'd be delighted to be proved wrong!

Thanks for this info - it would makes sense that the group appeared on the show as victims of a prank rather than being conventional music guests. I'd assume this was arranged by their management as an unusual attempt at promotion. I wouldn't have expected Candid Camera to have regularly featured musical guests - I don't think it would have suited the format of the show.

In the past soundtracks listed as (Mute) at the BFI have been found
So, if they have a good look for it, their is a chance that the soundtrack to this Candid Camera Number 10 could turn up?

I think it's highly likely that Orange Bicycle are featured in the BFI clip mentioned by William. 1966 is a bit too early for “Laura’s Garden”, but maybe the BFI made a slight error when dating the footage.
The Northern edition of the “TV Times” (13 April 1968-19 April 1968) featured the following description for an episode of “Candid Camera” broadcast on 14 April 1968:
In this week’s small laughter show Terence joins a pop group, children give their views on The Thinker and show us, not perhaps the best, but the quickest way, of making a bed. The show is concluded with a hilarious fashion parade, staged, of course, by the Candid Camera team.
Could this be the episode that featured Orange Bicycle? I doubt the series featured many pranks involving pop groups.
By the way, 'Terence' was Terence Carroll, a regular member of the "Candid Camera" team.

According to the write up, after a few more tricks, the producer suggested to the group the title of the next disc should be "SMILE ORANGE BICYCLE, YOU'RE ON CANDID CAMERA" !

John Bachini of the Orange Bicycle mentioned the interloping member was 'Terry Carroll' in an email to me.

Programme 10 (14th April 1968) which contained the Orange Bicycle pop group sequence had a stock date of 1966 on its BFI holding.
There are 7 other programmes like programme 10 which have a stock date 1966 on their holdings! which may be incorrect?
Can we see if we can find out the correct transmission date for these? by posting what the synopsis is on the BFI filmographic record and then, like programme 10 above, see if we can trace this through the TV Times entry please. Starting with BFI Identifier 589057 Candid Camera Programme 1 Production Country United Kingdom Production Company ABC Television Synopsis Four Candid Camera sequences i) A man is persuaded to remove his shirt to try the 'sensational mo-matic 30 second dry cleaning service'. He places his shirt into the top of the machine and it comes out folded and in a plastic bag, but is torn to shreds. ii) Two bogus salesmen call at people's homes. iii) A market researcher persuades members of the public to try out an umbrella which when opened turns inside out and falls apart. iv) Tow truck drivers are tricked into attempting to tow away a Mini car which breaks in half as it is moved. Held on Master - 16 mm Original Negative-CTA-Mute-750 Feet Stock Date: 1966
