This is an extract from today's Scottish Sun newspaper which has an interview with Chris Glen who used to be in The Sensational Alex Harvey Band who has a book coming out soon...
Chris mentions that during one memorable appearance on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops, hapless DJ Tony Blackburn wrongly introduced the lads as just The Alex Harvey Band.
But viewers heard Alex correct him by saying, as clear as a bell, “It’s the f**king Sensational Alex Harvey Band.”
Chris laughs: “They never let us perform live after that and we always had to do pre-records. But Top Of The Pops was as debauched as folk heard".
Can any forum member remember hearing this remark on Top of the Pops?
the article is a good read and Chris also remembers Zal from TSAHB sneaking into the Bay City Rollers dressing room and leaving a jobby in their wardrobe whilst they were on stage.
Lads eh! (tsk tsk)

I don't recall hearing anything untoward. What I do remember is Zal Cleminson and Chris Glen would do a funny little routine behind Alex halfway through Delilah.. The bass player briefly stood on Zal's guitar cable and you could see him discreetly trying to free it. He eventually gave it an almight yank just as Glen lifted his foot. The cable flew up in the air as they continued their routine.

Lads eh! (tsk tsk) Tony only introduced SAHB twice in 1975. with Delilah he called them " The Alex Harvey Band" but there was no comment and this was a repeat insert so couldn't have this one. The other one is THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND – Gamblin’ Bar Room Blues (27-11-75), it might have been that one as that no longer exists. The only other time he intro'd them was in 76 with the Boston Tea Party, then he called them the Sensational......

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band performed Delilah once (repeated twice) (if the BBC database and Popscene are accurate). Popscene and the original BBC database both agree (although not always accurate information on Top of the Pops) that the Scottish group's version of the song was performed once on 17/07/75 and repeated twice on 31/07/75 and 14/08/75. Cross checking editions in which Tony Blackburn introduced the group, he made one introduction to their three hits - Boston Tea Party on 08/07/76. This exists, and he announces "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band", so Alex's swearing reaction clearly isn't from that edition: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWF3S9OgQho - Tony Blackburn's intro begins at 3:57 31/07/75 exists incomplete - Delilah begins but the intro cuts off too soon: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWebx0VNpg0 (2:23-2:25) On the basis that the Popscene/BBC database details are accurate in their Performance and Repeat Performance listings, there is only one edition the newspaper article must be referring to, but sadly wiped: Gamblin' Bar Room Blues on 27/11/75

Did they do live editions in the 70s? If not, then any "untoward" interjection from Alex would have been edited out prior to transmission. So it could have happened and no-one knew about it.

Did SAHB and Alex Harvey appear on the same edition? Assuming that the TOTP database is correct?

Cheers William, as a result of this thread I had to dust off my SAHB Stories LP last night & give it a spin. What a great album, (with the brilliant reflections in a bar mirror cover), probably the last great SAHB LP, Rock Drill wasn't as good IMHO. I probably haven't played it for 20 years but it will certainly be required listening for a while.

I've re-read the interview and the quote.
Re Zal's jobby:- ""He recalls: “I remember Zal snuck into The Rollers’ dressing room when they were on stage and did a jobby in their wardrobe.”
No mention of TOTP for this bit, so happened elsewhere.
AND
""During one memorable appearance on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops, hapless DJ Tony Blackburn wrongly introduced the lads as just The Alex Harvey Band.
But viewers heard Alex correct him by saying, as clear as a bell, “It’s the f**king Sensational Alex Harvey Band.”
So it was ALEX who let out the expletive. Not my birthday-brother Tony, who's never sworn in his life....
(also good to know the SAHB stayed at the Aachen Hotel in Liverpool. I stayed there once. Never worn cowboy boots though. Mind you, I recovered from an OD in St Peter's in Chertsey, same place as Keith Moon did. F**king musicians.)
Warm regards, the lead singer of the Amazing Ray Langstone Band - name obviously not inspired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
