Just a question I've been wondering, as a whole, would you all rather have a handful of episodes mostly or fully complete or have most a lot of stories incomplete, but with extant episodes.
e.g: There are six four part serials with thirteen missing episodes between them. Would you rather have 0, 0, 0, 3, 4, 4 (three completely missing episodes, one mostly complete, and two fully complete) or 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 (one mostly missing and five half-complete).
This is how I see it:
Option 1:
Pros - The serials we have are fully complete. Easier to introduce new viewers to the 60s serials. Existing serials can be enjoyed to their fullest extent. Individual serials flow better. If a episode is recovered it will be more beneficial to the serial comprising it.
Cons - There are a lot of serials for which no footage is surviving (if those episodes are in season 3 or season 6 then that means that there is no visual record of the broadcast (see: The Massacre). Harder to reconstruct and accurately animate episodes. Missing serials are much harder to evaluate and can't be fully enjoyed. The years are pockmarked (companions and Doctors appear and disappear randomly without explanation. See: reading a book with half the pages ripped out).
Option 2:
Pros - Every serial can be experienced and evaluated. Animated episodes are more likely to be released for the missing stories. Missing episodes are easier to animate accurately and reconstruct. No serial is completely missing from the archives. Serials flow better between each other (there aren't huge gaps where companions or Doctors randomly appear or disappear without explanation. See: seasons 4-6). If an episode is recovered it has a higher chance of mostly or fully completing a serial.
Cons - Harder to introduce new viewers to the 60s. There are very few serials fully extant. Serials cannot be enjoyed to their maximum ability (see: The War Games if episodes 4-8 were missing). Individual serials flow poorly, especially if the extant episode from them are non-consecutive (see: The War Games if episodes 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 were missing). Partially missing serials are more likely to seem like teasers for the full thing than as effectively complete stories.

Mmm good question... Not an easy decision to make but I think even though I can ultimately see how great it would be to have at least one or two episodes existing from each story (serial) because we would have a better idea of the whole serial that way and it would be easier for reconstructions and to get more of a flavour or idea of how the complete original production was; ie: sets, actors and costumes... however I would still rather have more complete stories existing because in my personal albeit humble opinion there aint enough complete stories from season 3-5 inclusive so I would have to choose: option 1.
This way you could also have... Finally... More complete serials released on DVD/BLU RAY ... You know watching a complete black & white Doctor Who serial from beginning to end without having to switch to animation or telesnap reconstructions half way through

You know watching a complete black & white Doctor Who serial from beginning to end without having to switch to animation or telesnap reconstructions half way through Of course the real question is, assuming that there are still 97 missing episode, if they were divided roughly evenly, you would have it that Mission was complete, every 2 parter was complete, Planet of Giants had two episodes, almost every four parter had three episodes, every five parter had four episodes, almost every six parter had three episodes, every seven parter had five episodes, The Invasion had six episodes, etc. Every single story, bar a handful, would have at least two thirds of their episodes extant, but none would be complete. |

It depends on the story, and how much "Padding" is in it. Stories like Ambassadors of Death and Inferno, and to lesser extent Silurians, could have whole episodes missing without loosing much story. I think if i had to chose, i would like a 1,0,1,0,1,0 pattern so you have an example of each story, and could edit a 2 part compilation from a 4 part story. or a 3 part compilation from a 6 part story.

Hmm, it's a tough choice (and an excellent question).
On balance though, I'd rather have less complete stories and more representation of completely missing stories.
My reasoning? Well, I'd rather have every story represented in the archives, even if by only one episode, so to get an example of how that story looked and was acted. While it would be nice to have more complete stories, most of them already have episodes in the archives and I'd rather see the completely missing stories represented.

I would like to have at least 1 episode per story. It would help me picture the telesnap reconstructions better and would probably help any animated versions people make.

I would rather have some complete stories from Season 4 Seconded. As much as I'd love to see certain selected complete returns from Season 3, it is rather better represented than Season four, which has nothing remaining complete. |

For example, let's say some theoretical person offered me a choice of episodes to be returned. Either one episode of Evil of the Daleks (Let's say episode 1) or Episode 3 of The Web of Fear. Call me a Heretic, I'd take episode 3.
I'd rather have Web of fear complete, than one extra chunk of Evil of the Daleks.

What a conundrum set by Ian! I think I'd be more relaxed about saying I'd prefer to have something from every serial if i couldn't have it all IF there weren't so many gems missing from Patrick Troughton's era. So, I'd give up hope for everything else left unrecovered if I could get Power, evil, Abominable Snowmen, Fury, Macra and the rest of Moonbase and Wheel. And on that subject, if our wonderful modern-day Allan Quartermain (Phillip Morris) doesn't reveal something good this year about missing Dr Who then I'm going to start a campaign to have him extradited to Mars where the Ice Warriors can apply their sssssonic gunsssss at will.....
