By chance I've just stumbled across a report from the mirror in 2013 about the discovery of "Marco polo" recorded off-air to a cine camera at the time of transmission, did anything ever come from this ? or was it another dead end ?

It was a made up story by The Mirror, who were taking advantage of the recent recovery of Enemy and Web. The fact we haven't heard anything more of it in over 3 years confirms as much.

As a lot of people pointed out at the time, the practicalities of using cine film would have meant filming every episode impossible to achieve. You'd need dozens of reels and several cameras to capture a single episode. That's why the surviving 8mm clips are so short, cine film was not designed for hours of continuous filming. Plus even a single reel was expensive. Inventive idea, though.

And The Mirror... to be charitable, shall we say that they're always optimistic about Who finds, sometimes to the point of wishful thinking...

Just think: The rest of the world is only finding out now how dangerous fake news can be! Who fans had suffered, and (more than) occasionally fallen for, those tortures for years!

Remember the bru-ha-ha over the potential story "The Doctor's Wife"? Heck, I defended the possibility on rec.arts.drwho on the grounds that Susan was the Doctor's grand-daughter. And this one was planted by none other than JN-T himself. Sadly, the difference is that the ramifications of "The Doctor's Wife" being fake (i.e., we got "The Twin Dilemma" instead) were rather trivial when compared to the fake news that we on this side of The Great Pond have been inundated with this year.

And before you know it, Harold Saxon is your president. Should I resist him by filling my mind with nonsense... "Mary had a little lamb Its fleece was white as snow Everywhere that Mary went The Lamb was sure to go." ...or help him summon the Devil... "Ogo Terussawb. Maleht Tnew yram. Tah tereh wyreve wons saetih w'sawe cellfs tib. Malelt tiladah yram!" Does Harold Saxon eat Cheetos?
