I have heard multiple times that there are two occasions where footage from a Tom Baker episode is missing. One is in the Ark in Space which was edited and ready for transmission but was cut last moment for being too dark (Noah begs Vira to kill him), and the other was the end of the cliffhanger sequence in the Deadly Assassin. Could someone clarify if these are really missing and if they are, how much footage is missing. I would also like to know whether copies of the Deadly Assassin cliffhanger exist on other tapes or if it was never transferred from the master before being censored. Thanks. Also, is there missing footage from episode 4 of the Celestial Toymaker?

It's not normally The Deadly Assassin that's mentioned when talking about the missing sequence from The Ark in Space, but rather the edited sequence from The Seeds of Doom, as these were both removed by Philip Hinchcliffe from the final edits as he felt the content was too strong. The excised material from The Ark in Space is definitely gone as the studio recordings no longer exist. However, pretty much every story has filmed or recorded material trimmed from the transmission edit, hence the deleted/extended sequences packages on so many of the DVDs. In that sense, Ark doesn't fare any worse than other stories. The final freeze-frame to Part 3 was removed after the original transmission, but it was later reinstated from a U-matic copy. As such, the full length episode has been available for years on both VHS and DVD. The closing 'Next Episode' caption is missing from Episode 4 and was recreated when the episode was prepared for the Lost in Time DVD release.

Well, as I said, only in the sense that a scene was edited prior to transmission, so it's just like every other Doctor Who story.

Another shot lost in editing was a Sea Devil in The Stones Of Blood.

Another shot lost in editing was a Sea Devil in The Stones Of Blood. Really? That's a new one to me. I've obviously been living under a rock somewhere or my memory is worse than I remember!

The 4th Doctor Handbook mentions this, it would have been on the prison ship with the Wirrn & Kraal Android IIRC. At least one made a cameo in Blake's 7 a few years later painted black.

Thanks for your help. I am making a youtube video on the missing episodes to help spread awareness. If I'm understanding you correctly, then the footage of which you speak of isn't really missing from the episodes in question, with the exception of The Deadly Assassin footage. Even that footage, as Richard Bignell states, exists on U-matic, or recreated for the DVD/VHS release. The footage of which you speak (The Ark in Space, The Seeds of Doom) was edited out of the program before transmission. That would make the footage in question a deleted or extended scene, which a lot of the DVDs have on them as extras. The Vampire from Space (AKA: The Claws of Axos) studio tape has deleted and extended scenes that was included on the DVD release of The Claws of Axos for example. If as an example, the Vampire from space studio tape was missing, then the Deleted/extended/outtake footage would be missing, but none of the footage of the completed, The Claws of Axos, would have missing footage. The Ark in Space and The Seeds of Doom, are missing their Deleted and Extended scenes, but exactly like The Claws of Axos, none of the completed programs is missing any footage as broadcast. The only exception was, The Deadly Assassin, and that footage has been restored as stated elsewhere etc. Hope this helps. Ralph
