So was that one not true?! I think I read about that in DWM at the time that a independent production co made a pilot ep to bid for the rights Millenium Management & Productions Limited. Except no pilot was ever made. There's no way even Philip Morris can find a pilot episode that was never shot. Its beyond the realms of "expect the unexpected". My god, all that brings back terrible memories. Thank the maker we no longer live in times where a Shield Motor Group Proton Saga could potentially pull up outside a school fête, and out would step some unheard of pantomime actor claiming to be "The New Doctor Who"...

I remember when VCRs first came out (Young Ones quote: "oh, have we got a video?"), there was quite a marked difference between the number of VCR owners between, say, 1976 and 1981. I *think* the earliest bit of VCR recorded Dr Who dates back to 1976 (the earliest I've seen is 1978). By 1981 everybody had a video. Although the numbers must be many orders of magnitude smaller, I would have thought that the number of owned domestic tape recorders in 1969 must have been much higher (from a multiplier point of view) than in 1963. Richard Nah, someone found somebody who had a video recorded copy of what they thought Space Pirates 3 which turned out to be 2 on closer inspection. But not VCR. Open reel. (And not a standard format, either. All a bit Heath Robinson, IIRC.) Earliest video recording, but not earliest VCR recording.

Still it doesn't matter what format it's on if we get a missing episode returned! Unlikely we'll ever get one that way but not impossible.

Absolutely not, though I was just responding to the point that Richard had made re. the earliest surviving VCR recording.

Bob Monkhouse had a huge video collection. When did he start videoing? (He began audio recording in the stone age or soon after) Domestic video recorders first went on the market using video cassettes in 1975. I got my first one in 1980 in time to record the Five Faces. Still got copies of it.

I'm guessing mid 1970s, unless he was dedicated enough to buy a semi-professional format (U-Matic?) machine before then.

An episode of The Massacre. Perhaps because it doesn't have any telesnaps or any surviving clips I think of it as something I'm never going to see.

Given that we know this still existed when Phil made his original discovery and he recently said "But we’re on top of that. That is not going to stay missing for too long." ... if one had to bet on any specific episode being returned then surely the smart money would be on WOF3.

Yeah, but I don't think that was the question !

Yeah, but I don't think that was the question ! The question posed by this thread was "What episode would you be most Surprised to see returned?" ... and I was merely expressing surprise that someone would say WOF3.
