And perhaps you should leave moderation to the moderators? Also, in a discussion where the relative dangers of feet on ground investigation in other countries is invoked how are actual facts pertaining to the actual crime rates of that country 'off topic'? I think distasteful relative judgements of other people's countries is actually much more 'off topic'.

Meanwhile back to Dr.Who et al - although its a long shot - why not listen to recordings of Navy Lark and ascertain the name of the informant in HKG who recorded what were at that time lost episodes. I believe that he was mentioned in the various intros. as the Beeb announcer apologised for the less than broadcast quality of those recordings. Or maybe someone with contacts in the BBC Archives or the restoration team etc. could find out for you who it was. Someone here might know of a contact in the Beeb.
I still think that emailing the local press in HKG might work. The guy who organised a search for Clitheroe Kid episodes had great success simply announcing his search in local papers albeit in the UK. Indeed he now has so many recordings - mainly on cassettes - of varying quality - that he reports that he doesn't have time to assess them all.
Personal contacts are nearly always productive - especially those which result in contacts of friends of friends etc.
A few year's ago we located an great store of reel-reel recordings of 'lost' radio and t.v. programmes from the 1960s in Southern Ireland. We are currently digitising them all - its a long job editing out all the artefacts. We will offer them back to the Beeb as and when.

Any "Francie and Josie" in that haul?

Incidentally what we have been given access to is in a (very) private collection. But has anyone tried contacting RTE for 'lost' BBC & other programmes?

Now who is off topic! Nice work though. One time I asked RTE if they had any 1948 Show because they had originally bought all episodes. They replied that they didn't.

I've just picked up on this thread - without wishing to seem too negative, can I politely suggest to anyone here thinking about contacting a station where Phil Morris may not have been yet that THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA. If these reports of recent junkings are true, then alerting a station to the possibility that they have got out-of-contract film prints is likely to scare them into covering their arses very quickly. With a match or a bandsaw.
Best bet if you have information is to contact Paul V and he can either pass it on to Phil or make use of it.

That would be me.
Generally, it's a bad idea to contact foreign stations directly. I got away with it in 1984 when stations just thought all they had was junk, but by the time I went back to Cyprus five years later, in person and with BBC accreditation, the red tape was intolerable. It took a further year to get the material back to the BBC.
The situation is much worse today and those best placed to deal with it are the copyright holders themselves. RTE have in the past returned a great many programmes, many of them missing and I have a list of their Doctor Who holdings. Nothing we are interested in, but they were helpful and understanding. The bulk of the countries we are interested in are FIAT members and they all want to be seen to be doing the right thing. Sometimes they need a little help and encouragement, sometimes they need help with equipment or technical advice. Sometimes they need to dispose of junk film and tape.
Regards, Paul

Please can we remain 'on topic.' Discussions re: safety as a tourist in these less than savoury countries really belongs on the TripAdvisor forums. Take care. TBH, I suspect that discussions of the safety or otherwise of visiting the likes of Iraq is at least as useful in terms of missing episodes actually being recovered as being the hundredth person to email the usual round of TV stations Stuart

Would you like to clarify why you regard these countries as 'less than savoury'? Sounds like a bit of an off topic personal prejudice there if I am not mistaken. Mos Eisley is one of the most 'less than savoury' parts of the world. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. But some of the best missing episodes can be found there, so I'm told.

Less than savoury in this context generally means greater personal risk to the investigators. Just because you're a harmless fan looking for missing episodes doesn't mean the people with the machine guns and the black flags are all big fans of Henry Rollins*...
(* award yourself five Internets if you get that joke...)
