When I was transferring all my home-recorded VHS tapes to digital format on my computer 2 years ago, the most exciting thing was finding odds and ends on the ends of tapes that were not on the index label : things that had been recorded previously on the tape when I recorded over with something I wanted to keep. Mostly these were fragments of programmes and continuity, adverts etc, and even the start of an unwanted programme that followed the one I wanted. However, one thing I did get in its entirety was an episode of Rosie and Jim : it lacked hi-fi sound so must have been recorded on my original Ferguson VCR between 1985 and 1989. My grand-daughter Jessica, now aged 6, loves it, and has watched it a number of times.

I've been thinking of getting a USB device to transfer my VHS collection to computer for a while, but always seem to be short of money when it crosses my mind.
I catalogued my tapes a long time ago but the index is way out of date now, as I used to record over shows I had elsewhere & didn't update the list.
I'll make sure to save all the ads & continuity where I can.

The continuity and trailers were some of the best bits I transferred, I reckon! I don't have a USB transfer device either, so I copied everything onto my DVD recorder hard-drive, then onto DVD-RAM discs for transfer to PC. Getting the hi-fi sound from tapes that were recorded on very different machines proved to be an issue, and one that I didn't solve 100%.

I did think of copying onto recordable DVDs but would need to find some decent ripping software.

I did think of copying onto recordable DVDs but would need to find some decent ripping software. Those USB devices don't have to be expensive. Mine was quite cheap and the software isn't too useful for editing, but to my untrained eye it looks as good as it was on TV.

Thanks I've seen USB devices for £20-30 but not known how good they are.

If you're recording onto your own home DVD recorder, it won't be copy protected and Handbrake should be able to take it directly from there to a usable file (I've done that with some home recorded stuff before). There are some very cheap USB devices on Amazon - I tried one that was £2, and that wasn't £2 well spent, but I gather some of the £20ish mark are OK. There's a few reasonable looking open source video editors around but I only ever looked at Virtual Dub (which is nice, but you need acres of disk space for it).
