Don't know how many people caught the excellent doc on Friday on BBC4 but it's certainly worth a look on catch up Some wonderful footage from the 1962 series All That jazz which surprisingly the majority of which exists - Would love to see more of these
Missing or incomplete episodes for programme ALL THAT JAZZ. 09.03.62 with Danny Williams, Eric Delaney and his Band, Bebe Hong Suong, Ken Mackintosh and his Orchestra (missing) 30.03.62 with The Jack Parnell Orchestra (missing) 06.04.62 with Johnny Dankworth and his Orchestra, Bob Wallis and his Storyville Jazzmen, The Cousins, Jackie Trent (missing) 13.04.62 with Clinton Ford, Bob Miller and The Millermen, The Tubby Hayes Quintet, Susan Maughan (missing) 15.06.62 with The Jack Parnell Orchestra, Lita Roza, The Ronnie Scott Quartet, Stan Reynolds and his Music (missing)
Out of an original total of 26 episodes, 5 episodes are missing.
The preceding programme about the Everly Brothers also had some fantastic colour TV footage from the Chevy show from 1960 which from what I can see
on You Tube a lot of it exists - Wish we had the same scope of archive - Our first colour variety programme "The Hippodrome show" seems locked in legal loops.

Just caught up with the BBC4 documentary, and have to say I was very disappointed with it : having watched the recent ones about Tom Jones, Everly Brothers and Lonnie Donegan, all of which were excellent, I'd saved the Billy Fury one till now expecting it to be the best, but it was very much the worst. The incredibly irritating presentation style of quick cut-aways from talking head to talking head, and even faster switching between disembodied voice-overs without ever saying who they were, made this a frustrating programme to watch ; almost as bad was the insistence on filling in the sides, when showing 4:3 footage, with spurious floating things. They could also have done with supplying some filming dates for contributions from people who are sadly no longer with us, like Alvin Stardust. It lasted an hour and a half, but only about half of this was actually about Billy Fury.

To be honest Billy Fury is just before my time but his song writing ability does seem to have been underrated. I agree about the floaty marks they put over some old b&w performances. Presumably put there by some young producer to remind us oldies how terrible tv looked in those days when ,in fact, with a good tv and strong signal from your arial you would receive a crystal clear picture

Going back to "All That Jazz" seemingly Helen Shapiro and Roy Castle were on the show but I do not know which date?
I got the info from an article on page 9 of the NME dated the 4th Jan 1963 about a book called "Helen Shapiro - Pop Princess" published by Four Square at 3s 6d. The author was John S. Janson.
Anyway, the author makes a surprising statement about "All That Jazz" and it states..."For Helen it was practically useless, does a big show like "All That Jazz" ensure a proportionate increase in her public?" teenagers usually watch TV with their parents - an atmosphere from which they like to escape. The actual quality of the reception isn't good and most teenagers think television is old fashioned and "square."

Roy Castle was on "All That Jazz" on the 20th April 1962 according to IMDB.
No sign of Helen Shapiro though.

Thanks Shelley, it's a hobby for me it fills in my day now I'm retired I must admit though going back a few years I would never have imagined I'd be trying to find out info on Roy Castle and obscure TV shows from days long gone.

Thank you for researching these things William. It keeps the mind ticking over, and it is appreciated by other fans of popular culture.

Thank you for your kind words Tony.
It certainly does keep the mind ticking over! I combine that with doing the crossword in the morning so all these things help as you get a wee bit older.
