as network is releasing all 8 hour long episodes of 'the strauss family' on the 2nd of may,i am a bit confused when ITV first showed it in 1972 & repeated it in 1977 ATV amalgamated the first two one hour episodes into one edited 90 minute episode.what was the point?how could they show 7 instead of 8? were the first two one-hours ever screened in this country,or was it only seen abroad?

The first episode was indeed always in the 90 minutes slot- and not two eps joined together.

Am I right in thinking that the extra half hour has never been broadcast in the UK?

Am I right in thinking that the extra half hour has never been broadcast in the UK? Not in the 1972/77 transmissions -not sure what happened to it after that? if indeed it was broadcast at all? Amazing really that they could just chuck out thousands of pounds of footage -just like that- these days they seem to have trouble filling an hour and pad it out with "previously on" and "in next week's episode"

The Acorn release was the 8 x 50min version, so had the extra stuff.
