Excellent. A shame the D.L.T episodes will not be broadcast, the Human League will be hit hardest, and when (and if) they continue into 1982 will they edit out the Jonathan King episodes? Didn't he have his own spot on the show reporting on the American top 10 singles?

Great news that 1981 is starting soon, 1981 is one of my favourite years for TOTP, pity if The Human League are going to be affected as they are one of my favourite groups of this period.

There are 39 songs altogether that will not be broadcast in any shape or form. It's a shame that the only Human League song we will get to see is Don't You Want Me and we will miss U2's debut with Fire, Toyah's performance of I Want to be Free, two Ultravox performances and The Jam Absolute Beginners.
List below courtesy of robsmith1983
Light of the World - I Shot the Sheriff Stevie Wonder - I Ain't Gonna Stand For It (Legs and Co) UFO - Lonely Heart Mac Davis - It's Hard to be Humble Level 42 - Love Games Matchbox - Babes In The Wood Roger Taylor - Future Management Barry Manilow - Bermuda Triangle (Legs and Co) Freeez - Flying High Madness - Grey Day (video) Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida (Legs and Co) The Teardrop Explodes - Treason (It's Just A Story) The Beat - All Out To Get You Human League - Sound of the Crowd Duran Duran - Careless Memories Bucks Fizz - Piece of the Action Landscape - Norman Bates Ultravox - All Stood Still Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz (Legs and Co) Barry Biggs - Wide Awake in a Dream Rainbow - Can't Happen Here (video) Tenpole Tudor - Wunderbar Lobo - The Caribbean Disco Show Human League - Love Action (I believe in Love) Enigma - I Love Music U2 - Fire Siouxsie and the Banshees - Arabian Knights Randy Crawford - Rainy Night in Georgia The Hollies - Holliedaze Barry Manilow - Let's Hang On Shakin Stevens - It's Raining Elvis Costello - A Good Year For the Roses (video) Tight Fit - Back to the Sixties part 2 Human League - Open Your Heart This Year's Blonde - Platinum Pop Gillan - Nightmare (video) The Jam - Absolute Beginners Showaddywaddy - Footsteps Ken Dodd - Hold My Hand

I hope they put some of those performances into a best of the year compilation.

The Human League appearances in 1981 are available on their greatest hits DVD compilation which is quite widely available . Similarly the beat, Duran Duran, siousxie and level 42 appearances are also included in compilation DVDs or as part of deluxe cd reissue sets .

Hopefully these will be leaked onto bittorrent for people to watch if they wish to do so. At the very least, the performances minus the presenters should be available in some form! It isn't realistically like Siouxsie and the Banshees (for example) can be held accountable for any grubby activities J King was involved in.

Isn't DLT still under a suspended prison sentence? They wouldn't be showing any of his shows until that sentence has been "served" anyway. I think they've indicated that they won't be showing them after that regardless, although the statement seemed vague to me. I can only assume that would be because he was accused of assaulting one woman on the TOTP set, and showing him being leery whilst presenting the show (which was often part of his shtick) is just going to lead to further aggro.
King has served his time, of course. Channel 5 showed a Christmas TOTP a few years back that included King as a presenter, and that seemed to pass without comment.

We have become accustomed to the fact that the BBC's stock reply is that they treat each episode of TOTP on 'case by case' basis!

DLT was found innocent on all counts bar one where he was alleged to have 'fondled' a researcher in an inappropriate manner. I've since heard a podcast featuring the lady in question who laughed it off as she was over the age of consent. However, it seems to me she must have been approached & felt under pressure to give evidence & THIS is the one he's 'serving' a 2 year suspended sentence for.

I've often wondered why the episodes can't be shown with errant DJs being edited out? The performances themselves would be fine if the occasional rogue had to be dispensed with. (Cue the Smiths with 'Panic'... "Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ..")

Exactly Kev, why can't the BBC just show all the 1981 episodes they have and edit out any errant DJ's? After all I'm sure no one in TOTP history has watched TOTP because of the DJ presenters it was the groups and solo artists they wanted to see. In my opinion the DJ's were superfluous.

The defining line seems to be: was the person concerned 'representing' the BBC? Savile and DLT would seem to be, whereas JKing was more the outsider.
That would also cover errant performers for the most part.. Gary Glitter remains banned, whereas Steve Voice wasnt..

This is my first posting as a new member having followed the forum for years I feel as a musician in a named 70's band that i have to add my total support for editing out any intros that may offend The fact that The Hollies may be ommited from 1981 is without justification as it was the last ever appearance with Graham Nash AND Eric Haydock I would be gutted if a performance or full show was found and not shown due to the presenter which would affect the musicians ( who may still be on the oldie curcuit ) and should be allowed airtime.
