On the Out of Town Delta DVDs thread over at Roobarb, jwf quotes Jack Hargreaves' stepson as saying on Facebook that: "The whole archive now catalogues (phew) and moved to my home, with sound tapes and 16mm location film matched for about 50% of the collection of over 400 episodes. This is v.unwieldy material and expensive to process but we are getting there! The successor series is also becoming available, see here: jackscountry.co.uk/author/jackscountry/ " So does the first section relate to Out of Town? (I'm not on Facebook).I was under the impression that Out of Town's narrations were done ad lib in the studio, and that there were no seperate audio tracks surviving?

It's documented somewhere but essentially all the episodes had complete audio recordings. Apparently it was the practice at Southern (I'm sure someone more qualified can confirm).
What this means is that Simon Baddeley has a large collection of 16mm film inserts, with dubbed sound effects, plus complete programme audio for OoT episodes going back to 1969. All that is missing are the studio recordings of Jack in the "shed".

Thanks,Ian.Given it's Southern,I'm surprised that anything survives and the location is known. It's cheerful-making,since I thought that roughly zilch survived-in fact,I thought that the DVDs were pretty much it.

That's amazing news, scope for further releases then, hopefully.

In the early sixties I edited OOT in B/W negative, the film only being reversed on telecine (there must have been nearly 100 programmes lost including Gone Fishing when Southern went to colour). The other series I was involved with was "Kites Country" . Oliver Kite master fly fisherman sadly died in 1968 at the age of 48. His films started as an insert on Day x Day but proved so popular that he was given his own 15min slot. He was always very careful not to film with cameraman Ted Channel in Jacks shooting area. I am sure if he had lived longer he would have become a national figure.

I was brought up in Southampton, and I was under the impression that Out of Town was part of South Today...The latter was always on,though I convinced myself by the early 70s that I wasn't really interested in what was happening in Basingstoke.Pretty sure they had some remarkable guests, though.

I totally agree about Ollie Kite, we were robbed of a great broadcaster and character. The New Forest shop has a DVD of a film he made at Fawley ( www.newforestcentre.org.uk ) but aside from that there's very little of his work available sadly. Another countryman who made Day By Day inserts was Norman Goodland, a wonderful broadcaster probably unknown outside of the Southern TV area. ~iw

Norman Goodland! There's a blast from the past, Ian. Yes, the family was living in Hampshire then so this tall countryman with a beaky nose in tweed hat and wellies was a regular fixture with us too.

As has been previously discussed, Jack's commentary was always added live to the films as they went through the production gallery. Generally two films per show, in the colour era they were played in from either telecines 5 or 6 because they were the only 16mm machines fitted with aperture correctors to make the films as sharp as possible. The films were treated as deserving of the best possible technical/artistic handling as Jack's show was so highly regarded.

Can't remember if this has been disused. A reviewer on Amaxon mentions: "My husband has been hanging on to his old videos forever, having been brought up on JH and being a farm lad himself, identifies with many of the themes. So what joy to have replacements plus 'hidden' episodes. En masse, they are a hefty price; but broken down into units, not bad value; they keep him quiet for hours. Thanks. It's good to get the shelf space back too." www.amazon.co.uk/Out-Town-Lost-Episodes-Hargreaves/dp/B0095SFMBUWere these ever released on video, or does she mean off-airs?

correct me if I have got this wrong - fading memories !!
I recall Jack Hargreaves paying tribute to Ollie Kite - tears welling up in Jack's eyes as he did
I think Ollie passed away while fishing at his fav spot on the river...and Jack spoke of years before Ollie telling him if he could pick a place to 'pop off' it would be there...!
I may be remembering incorrectly but I'm sure I remember Jack saying that
Ollie was a lovely guy, far too young to go, and like Jack he was a TV 'natural'
I miss them both
