Has anyone ever heard the story related in the final comment by Roger Stormo on this page... wogew.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/the-beatles-live-project-possible.htmlHe seems to know his stuff about master tapes that go missing, having much info on his site about EMI masters. I don't know where he gets his info from about BBC trainees, but it's not entirely unbelievable, is it?

Any questions you want to forward me to him within reason, I will.

Not all It's the Beatles exists. Bob Pratt saved a lot of it, but not all.

Around 12 mins exist in the BBC archive. The first few minutes - which is on none of the bootlegs - are crudely edited audience cutaways. The rest has fairly complete versions of "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Money", Twist and Shout" and the closing instrumental version of "From Me to You". Like most, I presumed that this was all that survived the BBC show. However, some recent archive work has revealed that all four Beatles received 16mm telecines of this show and the "Juke Box Jury" show. That said, it is likely none have survived the ravages of time.

An 8mm of Juke Box Jury, plus three complete audios of JBJ do survive. It would be possible to sync them up, but the results, are, I'm told still not 'broadcast quality'.

That would be interesting to see the 8mmm footage - does the BBC have it? Is it complete or just moments from the show?

That would be interesting to see the 8mmm footage - does the BBC have it? Is it complete or just moments from the show? I hope I'm wrong but I'd imagine the footage is fairly short. 8mm reels only lasted 3 or 4 minutes and as you were recording with no sound it was more likely people would only film for short periods at a time, stopping and starting. That probably explains why most of the Dr Who 8mm clips are so annoyingly brief. I'm surprised any 8mm film exists at all of the Beatles JBJ - if it'd been me I wouldn't have wasted expensive film on JBJ, I'd have saved it for a show where they were performing a song.

About 10 years ago, a french collector had told me that a collector in Holland had a complete Kinescope of JBJ and It's the Beatles performance. At the time, this french gentleman told me the quality was very good. Will we ever see this Kinescope, who knows, but I think it does exist in a collectors hands.

I too heard this. I have always been doubtful of their existence, but as of the last month I have heard that some "Strawberry Fields Forever" "Rain" and Paperback Writer" promo out-takes will surface this month - something I'd heard rumoured over 20 years ago!

I hope your right about the promo outtakes Simon. Presumably if they exist they would be held by Apple

Well I'm sure the 'rain' outtakes still exist, as they briefly appear in the re cut 'Rain' promo that appeared on Anthology, which mixed the original Chiswick House promo, but with additional footage with clapper boards and then mixed to a black and white stage performance. The original clip was just the Colour Chiswick House shoot. Since Paperback Writer was filmed at the same time,, it's likely that the outtakes exist for that too.

It does depend on what promos we are talking about. There are the video promos in both black and white and colour and the filmed ones shot the day after. Of the video clips, there are several takes of each song circulating anyway. There have never been any outtakes from the filmed Chiswick clips though apart from some small fragments appearing in the versions of those songs which were used in Anthology. This included a clapperboard shot though so it does prove the rushes are still around for outtakes to be possible. I would be mainly interested to know if there are any colour outtakes from the video promos though as I have only seen the one version of each song intended for Ed Sullivan. There could be more takes on the reels though? That would be a find.

I hope your right about the promo outtakes Simon. Presumably if they exist they would be held by Apple Given they are being released along with the Neil Aspinall edit of "The Long And Winding Road" I imagine they have fallen off the Apple cart. I am sure they'll surface soon. It's sad that the Beatles aren't releasing these (along with Shea, Let It Be etc) as the interest in still evidently enormous. Of interest, the "Beatles Live!" project curated by Ron Howard, just may tie up some of the material we've all been looking for - no word as yet tho. Simon
