The Dallas Boys, Craig Douglas, Jill Day, The Three Barry Sisters, Matt Monro - My Kind Of Girl.
Tuesday 14th February 1961 ITV The British Song Contest Don Lang, Lorrie Mann, Tony Brent, The Mudlarks, Andy Cole. Wednesday 15th February 1961 ITV The British Song Contest. Mike Desmond, The Avons, Ronnie Carroll, Johnny Wade, Mike Preston - Marry Me. Thursday 16th February 1961 ITV The British Song Contest June Marlow, Rosemary Squires, The Raindrops, Johnny Angel, Frank Ifield. Friday 17th February 1961 ITV The British Song Contest - Grand Finale. 10:30-11:15pm, Marry Me wins, with My Kind Of Girl in second place.
I am wondering if William or anyone else can provide further information, such as the names of songs sung by the various artists, to help everyone, perhaps locate some Missing material from any of the 5 ME.
nb: the bfi have a filmographic record for The British Song Contest 1961 and similarly for British Song Contest 1965, but in both instances, no film or video is held at the bfi.

This was actually called the ITV Song Contest, and was set up as a rival to the BBC's Song For Europe, which took place the same week on the 15th February. I devoted chapters to the ITV Song Contest 1961 and the British Song Festival 1965 in my book "Songs For Europe - The United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest - Volume One - The 1950s and 1960s" published by Telos Publishing. Here in brief is what I found out about the 1961 event.

It's the same seller I bought the entire year 1971 from just the other week. I'm tempted to buy the 1961 batch as well but it's an expensive time of the year so I probably will need to pass on the opportunity.

From your post, it can be seen that the daily line-ups agree with tvpopdiaries above. Now we have the songs as well! This is a great help, if there is any footage, these song titles will surely help to locate. Yes, I agree with you about the name of the show, not being The British Song Contest, but is I.T.V. Song Contest, because on youtube the winning number by Mike Preston Marry Me has as the record is played, a photo of the single in it's original sleeve which says at the top 'The £1000 First Prize Winner of the I.T.V. Song Contest. Also on the 45rpm it says Accompaniment Directed by Harry Robinson. On another thread, Paul Vanesis has mentioned that a Harry Robinson was the original Lord Rockingham. Paul..is this the same Harry Robinson please?

I can answer that on Harry Robinson/Lord Rockingham, they are indeed one and the same person. Harry Robinson also conducted "Are You Sure" for The Allisons that won A Song For Europe in 1961. Therefore he had the distinction of conducting both the winning songs in A Song For Europe and the ITV Song Contest.

Song Contest, they are interested in seeing some kind of actual proof that it was known by this name, they have asked me to ask you, if you would kindly forward the paperwork if you have this, to them please. Hope this is okay with you...cheers Simon

Isn't it the Radio Times listing title which is definitive? It was,of course,ITV's song contest, but what was its official title?

Just 'River Man', I think. String arrangements on Nick's other songs were by Robert Kirby.

Does anyone know if this competition, and the 1965 one, were covered in the pop and TV annuals at the time.I'm convinced that those will prove a useful resourse someday.Well,maybe...

I think I'm right in saying that Lord Rockinghams XI of Hoots Mon fame were made up of all the English session jazzers at the time. Ronnie Scott. Benny Green etc. Green wrote a caustic and very funny piece about it in his Daily Mirror column in the 1980s. He's been invited to one of those Guiness style corporate gatherings for everyone who had ever had a number one record. Surveying the assembled gathering of those who attend such things (ie no one of any major talent) he speculated that if a bomb had dropped on the building at that moment the damage to the music industry would have been minimal. Tch. Those jazz snobs eh!

Tch. Those jazz snobs eh! I'm not sure that Ronnie Scott was a member of Lord Rockinghams XI which did include Benny Green and a number of jazzmen. However, their star was the wonderful organ player Cherry Wainer, who sadly passed away last month aged 78. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/11263698/Cherry-Wainer-obituary.htmlI think it was a launch party for one of the editions of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles that Benny Green attended and then wrote about.

Matt Munro did well with 'My Kind of Girl',including singing it on the Ed Sullivan Show in the U.S. in October. It's a bit misleading here: www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=22061 where it says that he won ITV's 'British Song Contest' (sic) with the song in February 1961.The First Heat, surely? Or maybe there was a recount!
