That's it ! - the guy (David Buck) keeps seeing the ghastly figure of a dead old man, who guides him to a underground room where his corpse is seated at an insect infested desk...in the desk drawer is a missing will or legal document that a relative badly needs (I think)
after watching 'The Beckoning Shadow' I was scared of any shadow for weeks after...! 'Room 13' re Devil worship was very creepy - I can still picture the shadow of a little demonic figure seen on a wall opposite the hotel, doing a manic dance in 'Room 13' - years later I saw a colour BBC version, it was awful, the most boring unscary drivel robbed of all the elements that made the original so unforgettable (to me)
Re the early Dr.Who - The Dalek extermination scene in episode 2 of 'Dalek Invasion of Earth' (1964) where three Daleks close in on a prisoner who attempted to flee...and exterminate him, with a 'hissing' sound, negative picture, and the guy giving a death like 'groan' cut to William Hartnell & William Russell's horrified faces...was quite unforgettable (as also was the Roboman comitting suicide by walking into the River Thames at the start of episode one) - kids stuff ?
Dr.Who never bothered to 'pull any punches' back in those days

yeah that really stuck in my mind as a kid watching it - and seeing it again on DVD all these years later it was just as good as I remembered it to be...
GC played his guest role superbly - that of a perfectly decent law abiding family man left unhinged by the tragic deaths of his wife & little girl....
creepy stuff the way GC talked to the burned doll, George could do the 'haunted guy' act so well....
'Gideons Way' was a great show, it had some thought provoking episodes, another episode has a woman who goes around killing pensioners she 'cared for', and another had a sad tale of a battered young boy - a child who is abused by his Mother

George Cole could play unhinged characters brilliantly. He also did so in a 'Return of the Saint' episode.

The Singing Ringing Tree from East Germany shown on BBC for kids.
The Tales of the Unexpected episode called The Flypaper. A man harasses a girl on a bus. A lady helps her out sending the man away. The girl goes back to the woman's home only to find it's her son.

You might want to check iplayer for the BBC 1 Wales drama "the devil's vice" which aired in Oct. and was repeated on Saturday night - it has adult themes so not suitable for all - it was certainly worthy of national airtime though, especially as the BBC makes so few one-off Drama's these days.

No mentions for 'Baby'? I shall bring it up then. Nigel Kneale's 'baby' has to rate as the single scariest thing ever made for television imo. my other half feels the same too ) The stone tape is almost as spooky. There isn't much TV that manages to actually scare, but these two easily nail it.

There isn't much TV that manages to actually scare, but these two easily nail it. I did mention Beasts in my first post, and yes "Baby" has a tremendous atmosphere, and unusually quite an explicit payoff, unusual for a show which generally left things to the imagination. It is very difficult to make anything really scary today as TV and movie-makers concentrate more on special effects, loud bangs and fast editing. One other show that gave me the creeps was episode 2 of "The Omega Factor", but I was only about 11 at the time. And *that* bedroom scene in the 80's version of "The woman in black". Miles better than the recent version with Harry Potter.
