It's all about personal opinions and whatever floats your boat.
I have 3 examples that really scared me as a kid in the 1970's
1) "During Barty's Party." 2) Episode 3 of "Quiet as a nun" 3) The closing credits of Star Trek, whenever they showed Balok from "The Corbomite Maneuver"

Indeed. I remember fleeing from the room as Day of the Triffids came on back when I was 8/9 - at 7pm! And then I'd wait for tapping on the windows all night... Yet I found Tripods to be a bit toytown, probably because of all the coverage on Blue Peter, or whatever.

I would have thought most of todays television would qualify!

It was THE Jungle episode of "the Keys of Marinus" that scared me all those fast growing plants. I suspect it was due to the Russian vine in the garden next door and the Japanese knotweed that grew over the railway at the end of our garden at the time.

I was ten when The Nightmare Man was shown, and found it terrifying. The "Telesnap Reconstruction" scene still chills me to this day.

He was only about 5 years old

for me the original ITV sixties series of 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' probably was the scariest TV show when I was a kid - episodes; 'The Beckoning Shadow', 'Room 13', 'Lost Hearts' & one called something like 'The Tractoth Middoth' (or something) plus a scary one with a young Edward Woodward in called 'The Watcher' (I think - first time I ever saw the future 'Callan' & 'Equaliser' star)
another spooky episode that stuck with me was an episode of 'Gideon's Way' called; 'The Firebug' where George Cole played an insurance guy who became unhinged after his wife & little girl were burned to death in a housefire...he started fires trying to make the London Council act re old 'firetrap' housing & he kept a burnt doll of his lost child which he talked to and from time to time returned to the burnt out shell of his old home, George's portrayal of the poor unhinged guy (who eventually dies in his old house) was excellent - even years later on DVD it still was powerful (George was far better than his 'Arfur Daley' role here) I could see why as a kid that episode had scared me....it was very true to life & George's portrayal of a normal respectable man gradually losing his mind through sheer grief was really spot on
the first Dalek extermination in 'Dr.Who' (using just negative picture & decent acting) scared me as a kid too....
while Patrick Mower's old series; 'Haunted' was spooky too....especially the episode re the Death of poet Thomas Chatterton (with Ronald Lacey)
today of course it has to be 'The Jeremy Kyle Show' without doubt which I always seek to avoid at all costs - pure Televisual TERROR !!!!
also a smug guy with a flat head presides over some truly awful talentless plonkers on some kind of audition for fame show is pretty scary too and best avoided....

Yes the Gideons Way episode "The Firebug" was pretty strong stuff at the time an excellent episode from an excellent series , i thought John Gregson was brilliant as Commander George Gideon i don't remember there being a weak episode of this series .

Yes the negative picture effect really scared me as a child i remember seeing it for the first time in Dr Who "Evil Of The Daleks" the dalek exterminating effect then again in the Troughton cyberman stories , i also saw it used in 3 episodes of Adam Adamant just seeing someone being electrocuted and turning negative frightened the life out of me.

It's a real shame this and its "Haunted" stablemate are largely missing. Some nice reminiscences there though!
