Here's an article from the 22/5/71 NME about a Pilot TV show which was proposed to be similar in style to 'Colour Me Pop' it was to be called 'Take One Plus One' and had already been bought by Australia!

Interesting. Presumably the series never got made despite the interest from Australia.
Since it was Steve Turner's own production company I wonder if he kept a tape of the pilot show? I think ajsmith who posts on this forum is in touch with him so perhaps he might be able to check.

AJ is in touch (I met Steve Turner via him at the Talbot) and may be worth asking him via PM to ask Steve.

Hi Ray,
I've just sent a PM to AJ asking if he'd be so kind as to get in touch with Steve Turner about this show,so hopefully we'll be able to get some information on this show.
cheers William

Thanks for sending the PM William, should have got my lazy backside into gear and done it myself!
Just reading the clipping you posted it says the Australian interest in Take One Plus One came from Steve Turner having previously done Colour Me Pop, most of which is of course missing presumed lost. Was this interest generated from seeing the shows on UK TV, or had some episodes been sold Down Under? Maybe this is something else Steve could clarify.

It would be nice to think that it still existed (although I would imagine it doesn't). Always worth asking though! The uncovering of fascinating info on Octopus and other obscure (and hitherto largely forgotten) pop / magazine shows emphasises once again just how much music television we've lost. Good ol' UK archiving. On the subject of unseen pop show pilots, another of those I've long thought should be released on DVD was the one from 1965 hosted by Simon Dee and shot on film (I can't recall the title offhand), particularly as it features The Kinks performing See My Friends and a few other interesting items. I presume it's still safe now that Dee is no longer around? Edit: I just remembered it was called Discotheque!

William's photo also mentions a series called Slam Hefty.
It would be also interesting to know where these were shot, as I doubt either ITV or BBC would have allowed indies to use their facilities?
Possibly an arrangement like 'Anita in Jumbleland' recorded at Shepperton by someone like Intertel or VTR services ?

Hi Laurence, According to Doug Hinman's Kinks book the unaired pilot show Discotech (sic) was placed chronologically as around the 11th August 1965. The book also says that the TV studio although unknown, was probably London? As you say it was hosted by Simon Dee, the pilot also featured P.J.Proby,The Walker Brothers and Sandie Shaw.Doug's book I hope it has somehow survived?

Hi, Stephen replied to me with the following:
"I recorded ‘Take One Plus One’ at Crown International Productions studios just off Tottenham Court Road. From memory, I believe CIP gave me the studio and editing facilities on condition I used their studios for all future productions and they then marketed the programme for me. The finished product was on 2” video tape and from what I remember had a couple of film inserts. I didn’t know it had been sold to Australia and it was a one off, although I did record other things at CIP including a feature film on VT with The Strawbs. I believe CIP have now closed and I don’t know what happened to all the material they held. Equally I don’t know if CMP was shown in Australia – I hope so as that may be a source of material."

Thanks for that Adam, and to Stephen for providing the information. The possibility of Colour Me Pop being sold to Australia would be intriguing as there were so many great bands on that show. I'd love to see the performances by Caravan, Giles Giles & Fripp, Brian Auger, Jethro Tull and Free among many others. There was an interview from a music paper around 1968 where the Top of the Pops producer said they were in discussions to sell episodes to US stations. It's a shame there doesn't appear to be much of a paper trail from that period about who the BBC sold programmes to. Wonder if there are many online searchable film/TV archives in Australia?
