I believe that they all exist - including the Detective one - although I also believe that one of them is not complete.

Although I've never seen it 100% verified, I gather only the first half of the "Bruce Partington Plans" episode survives ( up to the scene where Wilmer's Holmes is pursuing his investigation at the Admiralty building where the eponymous plans were stolen ). However, I'll happily be proved wrong on this score, since for several years I was under the impression that the first series survived complete.
I'm hoping that the idea of the episode only partly existing derives from the time when the NFT (?) cancelled a showing of the play because the copy they received was incomplete. I'm sure somebody will recall this.
Incidentally, an off-air audio covering ( roughly ) 20 minutes of the play also survives, which takes the action a few scenes over this point.

The soundtrack of "The Bruce-Partington Plans" exists complete, it is just the pictures for the second half that are missing. "The Abbey Grange" is also incomplete however, with only the second half remaining.

Disappointed to hear that there are in effect 2 non complete Wilmer episodes. I thought that these episodes had been thought missing but had all been found together. Does anyone know why two have complete episodes were kept. Were these episodes made up of more than one reel of film ? Thanks.

A lot of programmes that are around 50' duration or longer have recordings that are split into two reels, at least if they are BBC Enterprises copies. That said, the practice seems only to have started around 1964 (or thereabouts). In the case of at least one of these SH episodes, one of the reels of negative had got mixed up with a reel of Spanish sound negative (ie just the dubbed soundtrack, no picture) at some time in the past (ie probably Enterprises' fault!) and the wrong thing had been junked... When the out-of-date film holdings of Enterprises was donated to the archive, pretty much anything left was kept, and there is some archival value in incomplete programmes. There's always some chance the missing bit might turn up: in 1996 a batch of film was returned from the Caribbean. among which was half of "The Bruce-Partington Plans" - but almost inevitably it was the half that already existed!

Thanks Andrew for your comprehensive info - it's always good to get some real clarity on these issues, even if ( as Ian notes ) we now know there are two incomplete Wilmer's!
Still, nice to revise the 'received wisdom' regarding the series' archive status at last.
