Does anyone know what the state is of the BBC's archive holdings of this classic programme? I can remember a repeat run in the late 80s/early90s but I don't think they showed all 27 episodes and only a best of DVD release has appeared so far.Is this because the Beeb doesn't have them all or just haven't bothered repeating/releasing them all?I'm sure the Beeb's holdings of this series are healthier than for the original series.

All the episodes exist in the BBC archive.

I thought so thanks for confirming that.

Any repeat run of the series only shows a certain number and not all the episodes. Apparently this is down to James Bolam who is afeared of being typecast and blocks any complete runs or a full DVD release.

But surely, if typecasting were Bolam's reason, he'd block all repeats and all releases. After all repeats and releases of *some* episodes will still keep the character in the public's mind. Thus not having the desired effect.
The only effect that it would have is to annoy those of us who'd buy a complete "Whatever..." DVD set and a "What the Beeb didn't erase of TLL" DDV set...

Plus how could he be typecast by a programme he made over 30 years ago? He's done plenty of TV work since,it's Bewes' TV career that went into freefall. But Bolam is a miserable git about the Likely Lads, won't talk about it and all that.

Well, I don't understand Bolams' attitude. Besides he didn't block the complete re-run in the mid 1990s when BBC2 showed both series of "Whatever Happened To..." in their entirety, so to block the DVDs is utterly absurd.

Does the theory that Bolam is blocking the releases have any basis in reality? I've only heard evidence to the contrary, namely that Rodney Bewes has explicitly said Bolam *isn't* blocking a DVD release.
I'd be happy to slag off Bolam if he is blocking a release, but is there a single fact or verifiable source that confirms it?

Perhaps it is just down to the BBC. Other programmes, such as Dad's Army and Steptoe and Son,only got best of releases before they started releasing entire series.Maybe the same will happen with WHTTLL.We can but hope!

They in fact showed the complete run twice - once around 1997/98, and again in 1999/2000. (I plugged the gaps in my collection caused by my missing parts of the former run by catching them again in the latter run.)

An almost surefire way to bring out an official DVD release of all the episodes is to start putting them on DVD yourself.
I have done this (only for my own use, naturally) with a couple of other series and no sooner had I finished, the official DVD's came out!!!

According to the Whatever happened to The Likely Lads fan club site, the BBC are planning to release the entire "Likely Lads" series 1-3 on 27/2/05. The site goes on to say that this proves that their claims that most episodes were lost were untrue. This set is listed on www.play.com for £9.99 Can anyone confirm that the BBC are indeed releasing the complete original Likely Lads series, and if so, someone within this group surely would have been aware that this series existed in its entirety? It's on the BBC shop site aswell.Unlless they're keeping something under their hats, there's still twelve episodes missing.Looks like they're just releasing everything they have over the 3 series, with the 4 audio recordings known to exist included aswell, perhaps?

Peter I think it's a bit over-optimistic to hope for all the missing episodes to have turned up (although stranger things have happened). It's almost certainly meaning all of the series 1 to 3 episodes THAT EXIST! Details on these things are always murky prior to actual release. Chinese whispers and all that.
