Can anybody help me? I bought from ebay about four years ago a 16mm copy of the moon landings. The 16mm film looks to be recorded of a tv set back in the day, and has primitive editing and writing on the screen. I herd on tv a few months ago that the uk apollo moon footage is missing and I thought that this film might lead in the right direction in finding them? I'm not sure if this is what they are looking for can any body help and give a little bit of time in looking at the footage.

Back in the mid-1990s I obtained two 16 mm films containing BBC Apollo Eleven footage from a collector. Your film sounds similar, but it might hold different clips. Another collector I knew also returned a 16 mm film of Apollo 11 recordings at about the same time as me. We both lent our films to the BFI, so they could make digital video copies. I don't know whether they still retain them; Paul Vanezis (a moderator on this forum) seemed to think not. He might be the best person for you to talk to about your film, but if I can help I will happily do so. I do have a VHS transfer of my films, but it will be a some weeks before I can view it for comparison purposes (I'm away from home at present). Please send me a message on this forum in the New Year if you'd like more details. I do know that the most sought-after material from the BBC Apollo 11 broadcasts are the in-studio sequences, where the likes of Patrick Moore, James Burke and Cliff Michelmore discussed the mission. There's about 20-30 seconds or so of such material on my films (out of about 30 minutes in all). It would be worth inspecting your film for equivalent material. If your film has optical or separate magnetic sound, you might find audio commentary of the moonwalks or other mission phases by Patrick Moore et al. That could be of interest too. The NASA material is, of course, not missing. I hope that helps. Regards Vaughan

I don't think my film has sound, but I'm not sure? There is a flicker every half second and you can see the edge of the tv set it was taken from. I will definitely contact you in the New Year regarding the film and I will try to upload the film as well. I had a digital copy made of the footage to use some of the footage in a short film I was making for college around two or three years ago. then around the time of October it was on the News and The One Show that they annoced the Doctor Who had been found and the arcive are looking for the TV footage of the Apollo Moon Landings, and I knew I had this footage or some of it. I'm certain that it does not have the studio footage. What the enthusist must of done is record the key parts what seemed iportant at the time. The film is a 400 foot roll. Here is a still of the footage. Kind Regards Aaron Hi. Can you please post under a full name please. Handles or single names are not allowed under forum rules. Thanks - Laurence

However, I believe at least one 8mm film has already been returned, so yours might be a copy or something completely new. One website you might try for more information is Wiped TV News ( wipednews.com/features/apollo-11-the-bbc-broadcasts/). I'll be better able to help from 6 January. Happy Christmas! Cheers Vaughan

Hi, Just to say, I have a prompt on Ebay for various BBC 16mm sales (in the remote hope of some Dr Who missing episodes coming back) and this came through to me today relating to BBC footage of the moon landing: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264784389935?ul_noapp=trueNo idea if it is anything not already in the BBC archives, but just wanted to flag.

It looks like 8mm film and what is interesting about that is the fact that the BBC ( or someone) was issuing 8mm films of BBC programmes (something you would not have expected at that time) as its certainly not home movie film. so you should add an 8mm prompt in your Dr.Who Ebay search.... just in case.

It could be for viewing in schools. As mentioned previously, I remember sitting in the hall with the rest of my primary school watching a reel to reel video recording of the Apollo 11 landing. It could have been issued by the Beeb rather than recorded locally and if, and only if this was the case, it isn’t such a leap to the BBC issuing film copies of something momentous like the moon landings.

I've drawn Paul Vanezis's attention to this item. He reckons it's very unlikely to include missing BBC footage. The seller (who is genuine) has sold films of this sort previously, which contained only NASA footage.

Thank you for this.
If you find anything more, it is best to send a Private Message to this board's administrators, Paul Vanezis and Rob Moss. There are some collectors out there who will try to acquire unique films for their own collection. If you post a message on a forum like this, there is a danger they might spot your announcement, then we have a bidding war. It may become a lot more expensive to buy and return it to the public, or we may lose it altogether.
Just so you know in future. Please keep looking, and tell the correct people about anything you find.
