A classic one was mentioned in a piece on PJ Proby sometime in the 90's in one magazine where the writer recalled seeing Proby leaping through a paper hoop onto which some film was being projected on an early TOTP show... Proby himself confirmed he did do that and I've met two people who remember seeing that very moment. Odd tales and recollections like that do help to fill in some gaps which can never be filled visually. that was me as well! it was my Proby piece in Mojo Magazine in 1996. Holy grail stuff. A chance to meet a hero. And great to have a memory confirmed I really must gather up a few of my TOTP memories and post them on here 'cos my recall is generally pretty sound

I saw Proby onstage 11 years after that and he was utterly magnificent.

Talking about Rolf Harris and "Two Little Boys" i've often wondered if there is a performence of this no 1 song that exists from any other show . Does anyone know. I'm sure I've seen a short colour clip of Rolf performing this song on one of those "Top 100" type shows which looked like it could have dated from that era but it's hard to tell since looks wise, Rolf was remarkably consistent. The horn rimmed glasses look remained for all of the 70's and Rolf barely seemed to change or age... so it's possible that clip is maybe from a few years later. Very hard to tell. No matter what year of the 70's he looked the same - not even sideburns give any clues... most grew them but Rolf seemed to look the same in 1980 as he did in 1970! Yes i agree Phillip he never seemed to change much in appearance throughout the 70s , i would have thought he would have performed "Two Little Boys" on his own show at the time .

below is a readers letter from the NME dated the 24th October 1970 in reply to a comment/allegation made by the weekly NME Gossip column "Alley Cat" about a comment Jimmy Saville (allegedly) made to a (Coloured Girl) on "Top of the Pops."
see below for Verbatim wording:
17TH OCTOBER 1970 TAIL-PIECES by the Alley Cat When a coloured girl on "Top of the Pops" told Jimmy Saville she was from Hammersmith, he replied "You could have fooled me" Your Alley Cat considers this a disgraceful remark and BBC-TV chief Bill Cotton Jnr. should severely reprimand Saville and make him apologise
see below for the readers reply...
24TH OCTOBER 1970 Like Julie Cotes (last week's FYTU) I am sick of the Press seeking sensationalism for mere trivialities. It was rather ironic that in the same edition of NME your Alley Cat did just that. It was suggested that Jimmy Saville should be reprimanded for what was called a disgraceful remark to a coloured girl. In my opinion, it is attitudes such as the Alley cat has taken that cause more trouble in the world than the comments ever do. If Scotsmen took seriously all we English throw their way, the island would be in a state of constant civil war! But these comments are rightly treated lightly. I stand corrected but I do not recall any praise from A.C. for the devotion Saville has made in bringing a little sunshine into the lives of the crippled sick or lonely. However, he once steps out of line (a matter of opinion in itself) and is immediately stoned. Someone should get their priorities right. MERVYN JACKSON, Alvaston, Derbyshire.
apologies if this has caused any member any offence. If so then I agree it should be taken down by the moderators.

William,it can depend sometimes on how much information you get.If we had the audio and heard someone,White or Black, say "I'm from Hammersmith" in a strong Liverpool accent,we might think that Savile's reply was fairly witty!

Really interesting reading William , i don't think you have to apologise for anything it's fascinating reading these comments from a society which was so different to the one we have now . The source of imformation from these record mags is priceless keep it coming.

Thanks Alan,
here's an update on the story...
24TH OCTOBER 1970 TAIL-PIECES by the Alley-Cat Jimmy Saville wrote to b]Maureen Kinn[/b] asking for an Alley-Cat apology; emphatically NO[/i]
That seems to have been an end to the matter (but I'll keep looking)
21ST NOVEMBER 1970 TAIL-PIECES by the Alley-Cat Last Wednesday, Lulu and Jimmy Saville were guests of the Queen Mother for tea that's life eh? one minute being accused, next minute dining with Royalty!

I wonder if there were problems with work permits. They could be seen in the studio, they could be in the country but not actually be seen to be doing any "work". Also, the Musicians Union ban on miming would have been an issue: if they couldn't "work" they wouldn't have been able to re-record the track viz MU rules. They might simply not have known ... Yep the fact they could not perform must have been a union issue. Even in the 76 to 78 repeats there is evidence of this viz interviews with David Soul and Chicago. Certainly sounds logical about union issues preventing Canned Heat from performing on the 29-1-70 show. Yes, it would have been an MU issue. It is notable that those non-UK performers who played live did so with the TOTP Orchestra. E.g. most recently on the 1977/78 re-runs Thelma Houston, Yvonne Elliman and indeed Guy Marks, who even mentioned the orchestra in his prologue.
