I recall a couple of P.I.F.s from the 60's and the 70's ... does anyone know anything about them ...
The one from the sixties featured some guy dropping litter in Trafalgar Square and one of the lions, in stentorian voice, strongly urging said guy to "PICK IT UP."
The 70's one dates from 1970 I think and it was about fireguards. These animated redcoat soldiers were demonstrating how to use a fireguard ... one of them, the weedy one, says something like, "Don't look too friendly, do 'e, sarge." After the usual exhortation to the viewers to comply with the instructions contained in the film, Sarge finishes off proceedings by warning us all, "I'll be inspecting you later."
Anyone remember these? I'd love to see them again, if only to confirm the continuing soundness of my memory.

I've never seen a repeat of 'Single Track Road', or the one where the guy bets people money he can cross a busy road without looking (obvious what happens....).
Reginald Molehusband (before my time) is of course missing, as are some others.
Apaches is a PIF that was allegedly produced by Southern Television (cue guitar music....) and does exist....look for apaches and public information film on youtube. It is not the easiest one to watch, but was shown in schools....
Shelley, I do seem to remember the second one - although I have no TV memories prior to the first week of 1973!!!!

Indeed it is ... they could never do that now, Ray.

This is my first post here, so hello! I've tried everything I can think of to track down a road crossing PIF from the seventies. There are multiple copies out there of the Keegan/Gray/Bugner/Stardust PIFs, but the one starring singer Joe Brown seems to be eluding me. Does anyone know if this exists, even in audio form? From memory, it goes something like this:
"Smashing car mate, whatya do nick it? "Oi! Not so much of your lip" "Come on Dave!" "Go and help your mate across the road" "He don't need 'elp, he knows the Green Cross Code." "Oh, yeah, and what's this Green Cross Code, then?" "All the kids round 'ere are learnin' it, we'll show ya. Oi, put yer 'andbrake on!" "First you find the safest place to cross, then stop." "Stand on the pavement near the kerb." Look all around for traffic, and listen." "If traffic is coming, let it pass, and then look all around again" "When it's safe, walk straight across the road and keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross" "So, that's the Green Cross Code, then?" "Yeah." "Oh! Well, how about seeing me safely back to my car, then?" "What's it worf, then, Joe?" "It's a good thing, this Green Cross Code!"
If nobody can help, I might even email Joe himself via his website, to see if he has a recording. Cheers.

It is not the easiest one to watch, but was shown in schools.... I was very young when I saw this - probably about about 8 - yes, that sounds right. It is something that would be VERY hard to forget. Over the years, it would come back to me and I'd keep asking myself what it was. That continued until I saw it a second time, around 2011. I don't remember seeing it in school myself; it was only in 'big' school that I started seeing video machines and film projectors. I have a feeling I saw it at home (which was the HTV Wales region then) because I have vague recollections of asking my Mum why the little girl was screaming so much... Disturbing! When I discovered it on You Tube just those few years ago, it was very weird seeing it again but I remembered a few bits surprisingly clearly and it's a wonder it didn't give me nightmares back then. If it was something I had chosen to watch, I'm sure I'd have had no chance.

I don't know about this particular item (although I do recall him doing one as you describe) but a lot of the COI films are officially missing (affecting the pre '70s era more but probably later too). Most of what remain have been gathered together and released on Network's Charley Says / Charley Live sets. There are quite a few that I remember from the '60s which don't seem to exist, although there might be prints out there in film collector collections. A few more exist at the BBC, on the beginnings / ends of telerecordings of live programmes. Also likely there are some off-air audios out there. Sorry I can't be of more help with this specific film though.

I also remember this PIF and I am sure I have seen it within the last few years, certainly since the seventies.
I can't see Joe Brown's name on the inside of the "Charley Says" DVD sleeve but that doesn't mean it's definitely not on there.

I've got the Charly dvd and sadly it's not on there. It was only a few years ago that I realised that 'Joe' was actually Joe Brown, as the long haired chap in the PIF looks nothing like Joe in his early 60s heyday and I never associated the two.

Seem to recall a fair few 'litter' ones with Roy Hudd- he was the good guy in a 'keep Britain tidy' tee shirt picking it up..but he may also been the bad guy in a dirty raincoat and hat dropping the litter in the first place? One of my favourites was with Sheila Steafel as a daft housewife letting all sorts of con men into her house, at the end she tells her husband who arrives that he will have to wait as the house is full- when they go back into the house its completely empty as everything had been nicked. I think these PIFS actually worked.. especially the scary ones like 'dark water' I think it was called.

Yes, I often used to catch that one after the lunchtime Watch With Mother, always a regular slot for PIFs. It's on the Network set too.

Hello Laurence
I wonder if there is a comprehensive list of P.I.F information? Which ones are officially missing? I find them a fascinating slice of social history and wonder if there is enough material for Charley 3?
Best wishes
Alan

To have a list of what's missing, you'd first need a list of what was produced in the first place, to make sense of how much is missing. I've no idea if such a list exists (the COI would have it, if anybody does). I'd also love to see a Charley Says 3 but doubt if there's enough unreleased vintage material left to make it viable. I'd love to be proved wrong though (I'm only guessing as to what's left but I'd think that another volume would have been released a long time ago if it was possible). I daresay there are other items out there, with film collectors etc, if someone wanted to seek them out / gather them up.
