TOTP STUDIO APPEARANCES
28/11/68 : I'm The Urban Spaceman (rpt 05/12/68) 19/12/68 : I'm The Urban Spaceman 09/01/69 : I'm The Urban Spaceman
On the last one Marmalade appeared in kilts. The Bonzos upstaged them appearing in formal evening dress - half male, half female!

Ray, thanks a bunch for these!
Am very surprised they didn't get on to do Mr. Apollo in March '69. Surely it was expected it'd be a hit...?
Also, given how much Vivian apparently hated doing 'Spaceman', having to mime to it for several weeks running must have been pretty galling!
Interesting too to note the decision making process....
28/11/68 - its second week in the Top 40, climbed up to #25. 5/12/68 (repeat) - and now in the Top 20. Still climbing! 12/12/68 (no performance) - record must have looked like stalling outside the Top 10, so no show. 19/12/68 - now up to Number 6. Get them back on! 9/1/69 - still at Number 5. 16/1/69 - still at Number 5, but not brought back. 23/1/69 - still Top 10, but clearly on its way out. Again, no performance.

Is anyone on these many threads close to the Bonzo stars? I see mention of Legs Larry Smith on here and remember that as a student a friend and I would regularly go and visit him in his Oxfordshire home (the attic of an old manor house) after meeting him at the Bonzo's BFI event in the mid 90s. He had all sorts of gubbins from the group and his solo projects about the place. Maybe he, or some of the rest of the band still have tapes. Isn't Neil Innes suppsed to be a collector?
I remember Legs' delving into one of his portfolios and producing all the mock-ups of George Harrison's Gone Troppo album cover, which would have been released 15+ years previously, and various papier mache 'objects' that made me smile. He also had literally hundreds of VHS tapes up one wall, and hundreds more DATs on another. (The most interesting thing to me was his home-produced remake of Jollity Farm which I assume has never been released, including a lovely ukelele part by 'Old Georgie'.)

I know the village Legs used to live in. Won't mention it on the Forum, but you can PM me if you wish. The Jollity Farm is a legendary one with Ringo on vocals! Seriously. Meant for a Bonzo tribute album that never happened!
I'm in touch with a Bonzo Dog Band member's daughter - she came to my birthday and brilliant she is too - she came to my birthday which was a riot.
I know Neil has a non-musical film that's rare, but I can't say any more. I don't know any Bonzos persoanlly and I wish I did, you know. On a more general level, I don't mind approaching any stars/celebs/ex-celebs, whatever, as I'm always polite, and a lot of them are collectors too. I've been involved in the return of two clips from a well-known music show - that one - to two performers, and another is being returned to one half of a duo next month. All are copies and are safe, by the way, should you doubt me!!!!
Just while we're on the subject of Legs Larry Smith, any rumours that Elton got booed at the 72 Royal Variety are BOLLOCKS. I have seen a copy fo the show, and Legs tapdances. There are no boos (dear mods, bollocks is not a rude word. See the Crown vs Virgin Records court case 1979.).
Yes, yes, I have to cause mild controversy once in a while. Enfant terrible logging out....

Someone mentioned my TV Pop Diaries pages which Kev used to host for me. Well, they are now here... www.tvpopdiaries.co.uk/index.html and after 28 years' work, I'm still working on them!

Thanks for the link, some fascinating entries on those listings. Acid folkies Trader Horne on the Basil Brush show in 1970!! Does anyone know the status of Basil's musical legacy in terms of existing episodes?

Nice one,Laurence. But frustrating that this shows the content (mostly) of what ain't. Is there a list of what survives, including musical spots?

Thanks Laurence. Cross-referencing the Lost Shows and Pop Diaries lists the sum total of surviving episodes from the first four Basil Brush series would appear to be one, 12/3/70 with the Tremeloes. And the mysterious "Teddy Horne" listed by Lost Shows as appearing on the 11/12/70 episode, I'm assuming was actually the afore-mentioned Trader Horne.

Nice one,Laurence. But frustrating that this shows the content (mostly) of what ain't. That's the only drawback with the lost shows listings, I find. If you aren't aware of what exists, you're none the wiser. It would be useful to somehow indicate what survives too, so we know what not to look for! Isn't there also an edition from 1970 with Leapy Lee? Unless it's the same show that has The Tremeloes in? I think my old Kal guide lists two.

On the subject of the Bonzos, this picture was in this month's "Prog" article on them: img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/NoNameR/Bonzos1966.jpgNot seen one from this session before. Left to right...Lenny Williams??, Neil, Sam, Big Sid, Raymond Lewitt??, John Parry?, Vivian, Rodney (above), Roger (below). Any advice on those who I've guessed at...?

Btw re: Legs owning loads of footage, I think it unlikely. A mutual friend of ours gave him the link to the Big Show clip a couple of days ago, and he was apparently 'very excited' to see himself from way back when.
Unless he's got everything archived, but never gets it out!!
