I don't know if it's clear from any of the above, but 'Light Flight' was re-released in 1971.Could it be that it was on TV then and that that's why I thought it was old hat?

Pentangle were in the TOTP studio 8th April 1971 with "Light Flight". Fairport Convention performed "Si Tu Dois Partir" on 14th August 1969, and featured in the Album Slot on 15th July 1971 with two tracks, "Angel Delight" and "Instrumental Melody". Coincidentally, I interviewed key members of both bands for my first TOTP book in 2021... Jacqui McShee [Pentangle]: “Well my most outstanding memories of doing TOTP was that Jimmy Saville was the presenter and that he, thankfully, never came anywhere near us. Also most performances were mimed in those days but that maybe one element had to be live. That fell to me. I was a bit miffed as the others in the band decided to swap instruments and I found it quite amusing and had difficulty concentrating. I don’t think it was an outstanding visual performance from the band and I don’t think we took it too seriously as the appearance of a folk/jazz band seemed a bit incongruous but I have to say I quite enjoyed the experience, seeing what went on behind the ‘scenes’.” Dave Pegg [Fairport Convention]: “I have done TOTP twice. With Fairport Convention around 1971 when they had an album spot feature. We played (or mimed to) a couple of tracks from our Angel Delight LP. It was number 21 in the charts! Dave Mattacks our drummer wore a ‘just miming’ T-shirt! Around the early ‘70s I got a phone call from my mate Phil Pickett who asked if Dave Mattacks and I could join him and mate Tony Cox to appear as the band Sakkarin. Jonathan King had covered The Archies’ US Hit, and as the band ‘Sakkarin’ didn’t exist he needed some guys to pretend to be them. I arrived early at the BBC, and was shown to our dressing room where soon after I was joined by the producer’s assistant. She asked what the line up was and who played what and as I fancied being the lead guitarist- that was my reply! And the others- I had to quickly decide. Dave Mattacks is the bassist I replied and luckily in came the fictitious band members to get me out of trouble. The first run through was hilarious as for 4/5ths of the band it was the first time we had heard the track! The producer asked us to ham it up more and get some movement in the performance. This we achieved after a rather liquid lunch in the Beeb canteen. I was surprised how many of my mates saw the show and had many phone calls asking if I had quit Fairport Convention, but sadly none offering me a job as a guitarist.”

While we're on the subject, there was a nice ad for Pentangle's single in Melody Maker issue dated 20 March 1971:

'Light Flight' is a superb track. I went through a (rather short-lived) phase in my record collecting of trying to track down TV themes on 45 and this is one I picked up at a record fair, without ever having heard it before. I also have it on the 'Basket of Light' vinyl.
As for Fairport Convention, I remember reading somewhere that the band donned French attire for their performance of 'Si Tu Dois Partir' on TOTP. Does anyone know if this is true? Admittedly this was in one of those all-encompassing Guinness Book of Rock tomes, and I know there were a few factual errors, so I was just curious!

On the subject of Pentangle, does anyone know if 'Songs From a Country Church' (BBC2, 25th December 1970) still exists? An audio of the programme can be found on YouTube but no visual representation. For me it's something of a holy grail of both folk and Christmas music on TV. A snippet of around 5 seconds, with a different soundtrack, was shown on the Bert Jansch Tribute Concert on BBC4 around 10 years ago. No caption stating it was this programme but in an empty country church in grainy colour film they are shown so at least some of it must exist. I actually met the legend Danny Thompson at a bookshop talk with the writer of the latest Nick Drake biography at the start of the month and a delightful man he was. Indeed both were. To see anything of this programme on BBC would be a huge treat.
