Lost Episodes says episode 3.7 of BOOTSIE AND SNUDGE "Carnet De Balham" is one of four missing. I believe this episode is also known as "I'm in a dancing mood", Carnet de Balham apparently being a pun on Carnet de Bal or dance card. There is an episode titled "I'm in a dancing mood" listed on ITN Source for the exact same date (20/12/62) attributed to "Carnet de Balham". The other three missing eps don't appear on the ITN Source site.

Added: The song was a hit in 1936,while the film 'Carnet de Bal' was released in 1937.Someone was living in the past!

I'm more inclined to believe it was a normal episode that either did go out and was lost or was held back whilst a repeat broadcast and then lost. The IMDB page for the episdoe has a cast credit for actor Keith Pyott as a 'Solicitor'. He doesn't feature in any other episodes which makes me believe the episode is unique. With a title like 'Back Pay' and a solicitor in the episode I'd be inclined to believe that Bootsie & Snudge see a solicitor perhaps with a view of suing over back pay that hasn't been paid to them yet? But again that doesn't clear up whether it went out or was held back for some reason. Perhaps another mystery solved: Watching episode 2.2 The Trone System (3/11/61), Keith Pyott appears as Mr Carver, a solicitor engaged by Bootsie and Old Johnson to sue for back pay. The 'trone system' being a payment method whereby hotel staff agree to pool tips and share them. Seems pretty clear then that episode 1.40 Back Pay (23/6/61) was never made or at least held back till series two. Still waiting to hear back from ITV about I'm in a Dancing Mood. (Not holding my breath)

Nice one, kieranc.Out of interest,is it established that 'trone' is a real word, with that meaning? Apparently,it once meant weighing or measuring...

Well, it was certainly a new term to me but I found a couple of old newspaper references: From 1919... And here from a 1959 court case with a Granada connection.

Ah, hang on. Looking at that text, it has dawned on me that it's actually the TRONC system not trone. There are a lot more references to that online. Could be a pun title that I'm missing or just a plain misspelling?

That second one's interesting; concerning Charles the Chef of Granada Television fame! (I thought you just meant Granadaland). The detective at work. Added: I read it as 'trone',too.Looks as though we aren't the first to do so! troncschemes.co.uk/ If it's a mistake,I wonder when it came in? Anyone got this episode? Is there an on-screen title?

There's no episode title on-screen but it is on the DVD box.
I think I may have worked out the (pretty simple) pun. In the episode Snudge keeps all the tips to himself which I suppose makes it the trONE system i.e. all going to one person instead of shared.

I'm more inclined to think that this is what we Shakespearean scholars call a transcription error. Is the word 'trone' used in the episode? (I might even have series 2 around somewhere, but heaven knows where).

Either way this is another example of how an obscure piece of social history can be revealed from a simple TV episode that would have passed unremarked at the time.

Cor,I can never leave things, can I? I'm wondering if it was a little too close to home given the report on the chef.I wonder how much publicity the tronc case (no pun intended) had, given that the guy was a TV chef? I'm guessing that the newspaper reports gave the writer an idea for a story.

Strange that there's a precise running time on the ITN listing (25mins 35secs). Missing shows that are listed on there tend to have blank running times.

I've finally ordered series 1; I've been relying on a few off-airs previously. As a child, it seemed as though Snudge's perennial thing was to cough slightly into his hand and mutter "Have no fear; Snudge is here". Don't know that we've had that once in the episodes I've seen; maybe it's a later thing.

I've finally got the first Network set, so am in a slightly better position to work some of this out-hopefully!
The back sleeve notes that "this release contains all 29 episodes of the first series", which seems clear enough. Mind you, Network have been known to have wrongly made a similar claim with one or two other series, I believe, though the only one I can think of is the Glums episodes from Bruce Forsyth's Big Night, where the 'remaining' episodes seem to be all the ones that were made.
The last episode on the Series 1 Bootsie set ends with The Holiday. All the guests have left, management and staff are off to Bognor, and the builders are due. A great series' finale. (Though-Spoiler!-Bootsie and co. end up trapped on the roof in a cliff-hanger.).
Series 2 opens with 'Room for Improvement'. Like The Holiday, the episode has Douglas Bradley-Smith in support (he was only in B&S twice) this time as 'Mr.Barnett', rather than 'Bert'. Given that as Bert the Builder he pointed out how grotty Bootsie and Snudge's room was, I suppose it's too much to hope that there's a bit of continuity between the two episodes, and that re-decorating is also to the fore in 'Room for Improvement'? (IMDB-which lists 'episode 40 The Trone System as the series 1 finale-has episode synopses for series 1 but none for 2).
Oh, and there's a nice little time-marker in Rally Round the Flag, the third-from-last episode, which features Honor Blackman organising the boys to run a flag-day on 2 June 1961...which was the date this one was broadcast, and least in the area from which Network takes its T/X dates
