That's a complete surprise! Presumably it came from Pete Townshend. So I wonder if we can take it that a perfect broadcast quality version is now back at the BBC as a result of it's inclusion in this documentary?
Very nice to see it in this quality!

After many years of seeing the t/r version, seeing that footage from VT was an absolute treat. Great they featured Noel's intro and the comical smashing up climax with Townshend giving his angry two fingered salutes!
Good documentary and high time one was made about what is for me, the definitive Who album.

A very nice surprise indeed when this popped up last night. Definately the best version I've ever seen of '5:15' and great that it's back at the BBC. Can we see it in full now please...

The Who/Trinifold had always had 5:15 performance due to the fact that Jeff Klein took a copy from the BBC Archives for "The Kids Are Alright" film. The guitar/drum smashing is shown at the end of the film. This was not shown in the original show, which was the 500th Top of the Pops from October 4th 1973.
Between the time he took a copy (Presumably sometime between 1975-77) and the release of the film, the 500th edition of Top of the Pops was wiped from the archives. I guess now it is back in the BBC Archives, as they must have changed policy of taking clips back as they did with Jean Genie late last year.

Pretty sure it's just this clip, it's been known about for years that a pristine VT exists of it and how great to see it at last !

It would have been even better if they did 'The Who at the BBC' like they have with other artists. There's enough material with all the TOTP clips, A Whole Scene Going,OGWT and other clips and if they needed to fill up time there's the Charlton gig. The whole of the 5.15 could have been shown as part of the compilation.

Unlikely any of these clips are in the official BBC archive. Jean Genie isn't back at the BBC Archives. Production departments get hold of this material now, ánd they keep the master tapes to prevent other productions buying the footage, thereby giving them an exclusivity.

The whole of the 5.15 could have been shown as part of the compilation. They'd have to really scrape the barrel as far as studio performances are concerned. The 1960s and 1970s selection is very dry. For the '60s, there's the two 'Whole Scene Going' performances and two 'I Can See for Miles', one from 1967 b/w and the more familiar 'Pop Go the Sixties' performance, that's it. Then for the 70's, 'Won't Get Fooled Again', the two OGWT clips and '5:15'. Then after that, there's 'You Better You Bet' from 1981, then I'm not quite sure if there's anything else...

Mark, does the BBC have the edited version, or just the full length version with the smash ups?
I've seen Jimmy Savile appearing at the end back announcing the song online.

The 5.15, if it was in perfect quality, must have come from eelpie/EAFA. I'd mentioned the clip to Mark Cooper at our meeting in March and I also had emailed Richard O'Casey at the Archive about it.
Now, for those of you who have the DVD 'the Kids are Alright', if you go to the credits (Long Live Rock), you can see a tiny segment of 5.15 on there. It is exactly the same as the BBC clip. I've actually freeze-framed and slow-mo'd it, so there is no doubt!

Do they have 'I Don’t Even Know Myself' and 'Naked Eye' from TOTP 31/12/70 in their archives?
