I'm not a frequenter of this board, and so don't know if this is old news to you (in which case apologies). I did post this on the Mausoleum Club a few weeks ago.
A complete good quality audio of the third season 'Out Of The Unknown' episode 'The Yellow Pill' has been found and has now been transferred and returned to the BBC sound archive.
Regards, Mark Slater

was it an OOTU episode where people could serve the time for a crime they hadn't commited then do the deed if they survived the punishment? I think Edward Judd was in it

Yes. The episode was "Time In Advance", from the first season. I saw this one at a screening. Good episode.

Lawrence,
If you saw it at a screening, then is it by definition not lost - unless it was lost after you'd seen the screening? I'm confused!

"Time In Advance" resides safely at the Beeb and is not lost.

I remember seeing a clip from (I think) one of those 'Out of the Unknowns' in the 70s. It had that fellow from UFO and he was sitting at a table in silence with a pen in a great deal of concentration, I think connected with some problem involving his space-craft.

The scene you recall derives from the now lost 1969 OOTU play 'Beach Head' ( featuring Ed Bishop as the deranged commander of a doomed planetary survey team, and was originally screened as the BBC's entry in the 1968 Trieste Fantasy Film Festival ). Would be fascinated to know if this clip is still lurking around on an extant programme. Colin

I think it was in one of those 70s BBC specials on science, but sadly it was a long, long time ago (at least 25 years). Although it was rare to see whole b/w programmes in the 70s, clips were often shown. I can vividly remember the special which showed the 'tank' sequence from Quatermass II (in 1977).

Thanks for the info Andy. I know that snippets of OOTU material turned up ( in the sixties ) in the likes 'Towards Tomorrow' and 'Tomorrows World', particularly anything related to the work of Isaac Asimov and developments in the field of robotics. It seems that the trend continued into the seventies since b/w clips of the OOTU play 'Liar' have also survived - perhaps extant editions of 'Horizon' are an untapped source here ( purely guesswork of course! ). Much of this material was later given another airing in the "Future Fantastic" documentaries of the nineties - would love to know how the researchers for this programme tracked down their material! :-) Colin
