Peter, if I were you i'd enlist the help of someone like the Doctor Who restoration team or 405 Alive, who will be able to loan machines to make the transfers. This would be a much safer way of getting the material to a modern format (by people who have done this sort of thing before). And the results will likely be better too; i'd be looking at making a transfer to something a LOT better quality than domestic VHS if I were you (especially for a first transfer - the tapes could be problematic and may even be unplayable at second transfer, you never know). Bearing in mind the uniqueness of these recordings, it would make sense to get the help of people best qualified to do the transfers. I'd hate for the material to be irretrievable...

Yes, may I echo Laurence Piper and give you the web site that was given to me, which is: www.restoration-team.co.uk/No chances can be taken as, in my opinion, there will almost certainly be material that the archives do not possess. Yours,

Peter has regularly been posting about his progress with these tapes for several weeks on the RT forum.

We had access to a Philips recorder in 1973 - though I am convinced it was 1972. We recorded two episodes of the Avengers - Fog and Bizarre on their first colour broadcast and we still have these copied onto VHS.
We regularly recorded Who to see again from Pertwee days, but we couldn't afford to keep them - £20 an hour! We recorded a lot of Whos to keep from 1975 when we had our own VCR. - including off air Pyramids of Mars, Brain of Morbius.
Avengers Fog has at least one line of dialogue (a cricket joke) that does not appear on the DVD release or earlier VHS release - so a whole other topic is cuts made before release. Avengers "Take Over" has a line about drilling a hole into the head which was cut on the VHS version, but I think appears on the DVD. I wonder how few copies there ever were of shows on film, let alonetaped or telerecorded series.

From what I remember Peter saying it was a BBC repeat of the 50's Hancocks already in existance, 'The Blood Donor' was one episode he mentioned as being on those tapes.

they were named on the RT forum ages ago, nothing was missing. I must have missed that! Did the cassettes contain any material of interest? I recall that some continuity footage was found, which, whilst certainly not a major find, is still... nice.

But are the Hancocks from VT? According to Wilmut, "The Radio Ham" was transmitted from VT as late as 1969. The 16mm film recordings of some of those later "Hancock"s are truly appalling.
