Ok. At the BFI according to LSA.
This time ATV stuff
Here Goes......
Reg Varney (Variety show) 1973 - 74 : Lost shows indicate 13 out of original 14 episodes missing.
BFI "have" 6 episodes listed, 5 are missing on lost shows site
23/2/74 , 2/03/74, 16/03/74, 23/03/74, & 30/03/74
In other words, all of the series two episodes exist except the first episode !
The Jimmy Tarbuck Show 1968-75 : Lost shows say 16 of 22 are missing.
BFI list a missing episode 16/07/74 which details match guests in Lost Shows listed missing episode of 18/07/74
The Adventures of Aggie : Lost shows say of 26 eps, there are 21 missing.
BFI list :
17/09/56 Top Secret (first episode) - Elizabeth Allen
24/09/56 Monk's Prior
01/10/56 Spanish Sauce - Patrick McGoohan
8/10/56 Cobalt Blue - Maggie Smith
15/10/56 Tangier
22/10/56 The Chiseler
29/10/56 Peace & Quiet - Eric Pohlmann, Edward Mulhare
5/11/56 Wedding In Corsica
12/11/56 Festival of Fear
26/11/56 Halvah
10/12/56 Snap Judgement
17/12/56 Tall Pidgeon - Dick Emery
7/01/57 Diamonds In The Rough
14/01/57 Grip Of Danger - Rupert Davies
21/01/57 Berlin Story - Stephen Boyd
and 11/03/57 Tarboosh
which would mean only 5 episodes of this series are missing.
Spotlight (monthly variety show) 1967-68 : Lost shows indicate all 8* episodes are missing
BFI list has
8/10/67 Benny Hill, Noel Harrison
5/11/67 - Tommy Cooper, Robert Goulet
12(17)/12/67 - Engelbert Humperdinck (Gawd bless 'im), Shelley Berman
7/01/68* - Phil Silvers
18/02/68 - Tom Jones
24/03/68 - Eddie Fisher, Roy Castle, Connie Stevens
14/04/68 - Paul Anka, Benny Hill
2/06/68 Trini Lopez, Frank Gorshin
16/06/68* Frankie Vaughn, Vikki Carr
The two episodes marked * are NOT on the Lost Shows list and appear to be additional episodes previously unidentified as surviving or indeed missing, i.e. (at least) 9 episodes appear to have been made, not 8.
But one of the episodes on Lost Shows is undated being a duplicate listing of 08/10/67 (perhaps should be Sep 67) but doesn't have guest details to verify if it is one of the extra two shows above as missing. So is it possible actually 10 episodes or more were made?
This Is...Tom Jones Lost Shows indicate 43 episodes are still missing from original 59 (I am aware that a couple have probably recently turned up and haven't been updated.
But wait for this............
According to the BFI listing of the dozens they have, 26 are among the missing episodes!!! Leaving only 18 episodes apparently missing!
I won't list all the guests, but I have cross checked to see they match the missing episode details and they do (with a couple of details**)
"Missing" episodes in the list
12/01/69, 16/02/69, 6/04/69, 13/04/69, 11/05/69, 23/11/69, 30/11/69, 7/12/69, 21/12/69 (previously NTSC copy), 25/12/69, 28/12/68,13/01/70,20/01/70, 17/02/70, 02/05/70, 20/09/70, 4/10/70, 11/10/70, 25/10/70, 8/11/70, 15/11/70, 29/11/70, 6/12/70, 3/01/71, 17/01/71**, 4/03/71, 25/03/71.
the 17/01/71 episode on lost shows is listed as 16/01/71 in LSA/BFI but guest details match.
Sadly among the still missing episodes would be appearances by, Stevie Wonder, Bee Gees, Terry-Thomas, C W of Arthur Brown, Paul Anka, Dave Clark 5, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Who, Sonny & Cher, Liza Minnelli, Smokey Robinson, Lulu, Liberace & Bruce Forsyth.
There are also 8 additional episodes listed as held by BFI which are undated (noted @1970) and have VTR references which are NOT on the LostShows database (so forgive me if this is because they are KNOWN to exist, but I suspect not). BFI lists them as "probably US episodes" still made by ATV with the same producer. I know the show moved between UK & US based episodes as a co-production by ATV/ABC in America. Perhaps these are a single US run (still under the This is...Tom Jones banner). Though the show always atttacted great guest stars, the total US bias of these episodes might indicate that is the case. There is also a short promotional reel for the introduction of the show to the US in the archive.
These episodes are
VTR 1981f - Liza Minnelli, Edward G Robinson
VTR 2247d - Bob Hope, Aretha Franklin
VTR 2248d - Diahann Carroll, Zero Mostel
VTR 2249d - Steve Lawrence, Eddie Gorme, Jose Ferrer
VTR 2250e - Burt Bacharach, Anne Bancroft
VTR 2251m - Glen Campbell, Nancy Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis
VTR 2252m - Perry Como, Debbie Reynolds
VTR 2253f - Bob Hope, The Supremes
If all of these DO actually exist, I'd imagine the implications for the BFI archivists are huge. I'd also expect that given Sir Tom's high profile these days, DVD companies will be VERY interested (clearance difficulties notwithstanding).
Don't get me wrong. I still have lingering doubts that this many "missing" episodes for these series could exist uncatalogued at the BFI. But I am clinging to the hope that if they were simply an "episode guide" style listing of old shows, surely EVERY episode would be listed !
Here's hoping anyway.
Lastly for now, there are dozens of episodes of Crossroads. I'm not an expert so again forgive me if some of these have turned up elsewhere. The following are among the listed episodes and are apparently missing according to Lostshows.
Ep 1899 24/04/73
Ep 1941 5/07/73
Ep 2175 21/08/74
Ep 2260 21/01/75
Ep 2294 20/03/75
Ep 2295 21/03/75
Ep 2522 29/04/76
I haven't finished going through all the episodes listed yet but the above 7 were from a search of around 60 so far.........
EDIT - I'll add any further "missing" episodes here as I find them..
Ep 1894 13/04/73
Ep 1904 02/05/73
Ep 1923 05/06/73
Ep 1926 08/06/73

Ep 1970 24/08/73
Ep 2011 06/11/73
Ep 2017 15/11/73
Ep 2686 10/02/77
Ep 2866 22/12/77
Ep 3408 22/01/81
EDIT - Search now complete on Crossroads...20 "missing" episodes listed
Phew......that's the fruits of an afternoon's search so far.
(Sadly Tiswas episodes listed match all known existing eps/partial eps.)
Finally they list an ATV series of Marti Caine from 1977 which I can't verify on Lost Shows (search for Marti fails without further search words and a search for Marti Caine doesn't give this show on the list - the BBC 1977 onwards show yes). I take it this series has always been known to exist - all 6 episodes & a special are listed
