After some research looking at TV listings in The Guardian archive I find that I probably have part of the 20.11.82 edition. Isn't that typical?

A higher survival rate than I was originally led to believe and it's really strange looking through those listings because I can remember seeing most of those shows! Mind you trying to remember finer details is another matter after 30 years or so but here's some bits... Series 1o 30.10.82 Episode 5 - Dennis Loccoriere and Ray Sawyer from Dr Hook; the wedding of Keith Chegwin and Maggie Philbin Amusing this edition is incomplete since I recall there being much fuss about Chegwin and Philbin's wedding... I think when the wedding bits were on, I switched over to other channel since I couldn't stand Cheggers! I do however vividly remember the two guys from Doctor Hook sat alongside Mike Read performing an acoustic ballad which is strange since I was never a fan of theirs but did like the song they did. o 01.01.83 Episode 13 - David ICKE, Mike FINDLAY, Barry TOOK & Vicki KLEIN Barry Took, like David Icke was a regular on the earlier shows but can't quite remember why he was there. I knew of his past work. I do recall there being a competition where the prize was some overseas trip with him... I can still see a film insert of the plane taking off and Took sucking in his cheeks pulling a silly face as the plane rose. No idea which edition this was but seeing Took's name triggered that memory. o 22.01.83 Episode 16 - Barbara WOODHOUSE, Geoff CAPES & Davy JONES, music from Incantation, The Maisonettes & Cava Cava Do remember this one since it was funny to see Davy Jones of The Monkees on the show taking calls as well as Geoff Capes. I'm sure they had Jones and Capes stood together at one point showing how tiny Jones was by comparison to Capes! o 29.01.83 Episode 17 - Delia SMITH, Mike BATT, Sue BARKER, Ward ALLEN & Tears for fears Just checked wiki for Mike Batt. Sadly it's not this appearance I remember - I recall a later edition with Batt promoting his musical "The Hunting Of The Snark" o 19.03.83 Episode 24 - The National Youth Orchestra, B.A.Robertson and Bonnie Tyler Remember Bonnie Tyler taking calls and promoting her latest hit. BA Robertson seemed to be a semi-regular guest, very chummy with Mike Read. Again, probably a later show but I do remember Robertson plugging a musical stage production ABBACADABRA based on the songs of ABBA and the prize being a rather garish looking cake of some spooky looking castle. I remember thinking it was a crap prize! o 29.10.83 Episode 5 - Patrick MOORE, Mat IRVINE, Paula Ann BLAND, Limahl, judo expert Neil ADAMS, The BOOMERS Oh God... this edition haunts me to this day... probably my strongest memory. Paula Ann Bland was better known as Claire from Grange Hill and she was promoting a single she had made - a cover of "The Locomotion" - she mimed to it and as she did so, the SS team joined in doing the dance and seeing John Craven getting well into, chunky sweater and all was a truly bizarre sight. I get a horrible feeling Patrick Moore was involved in that somewhere as well seeing he was on this edition... I'd imagine a Grange Hill fan will have this one as an off-air. o 10.12.83 Episode 11 - Elton John, The Police, Slade, Paul Daniels, Tracey Ullman, Russell Grant Sods law this one's gone. I have vague memories of Elton being on the show and it being a big deal... can't remember The Police being there in person, I presume they were on an insert. Russell Grant seemed to be around a lot, and Paul Daniels appeared a few times. It was a rather chummy show thinking back on it. o 14.01.84 Episode 15 - Leo SAYER, Robin GIBB, Juan MARTIN & Nerys HUGHES Yep... recall this one. Nerys - whom I fancied - taking some calls. Can't remember Robin Gibb sadly but Leo Sayer... he was playing and showing off on a harmonica and that led to the inevitable duet with Mike Read! o 24.03.84 Episode 25 - Mat IRVINE, Steve LEVINE, Roald DAHL & his grand-daughter Sophie Vague memory of the Dahl's because I thought it very strange to see Roald in person and wondered why he was on such a show. I do hope his appearance exists out there somewhere for historical purposes.

And blow me... there is the sequence I remember from 30.10.82 in one of those links Ray posted... how strange to see it again after almost 30 years.
Not looked at the Todd Carty clips yet but my memory is he was going on about The Beatles and his prizes was all Beatles stuff... their 20 Greatest Hits album being plugged as well I seem to recall.
PS - I've now put the word out about the Paula Ann Bland appearance to some Grange Hill experts to see if they can unearth a copy.

Oh My God! How can stuff from the 1980's be missing?? I used to watch "Saturday Superstore" as a kid back in the 80's and you just take it for granted that they didn't wipe it back then? Were they really wiping stuff as recently as the 80's?
I have a LOAD of old VHS tapes in my home from the later 80's - about 1985 onwards, so I am beginning to wonder if there might be stuff on those tapes that is rare? I was 15/16 in 1985 when we first got a VHS video recorder in our home, and it was quite something to be able to tape stuff! It was a real novelty back then!.

I also was surprised at how much 1980s TV has been wiped, though some has turned up on home recordings.
I remember a clip of Sophie Dahl on Before They Were Famous, with grandad Roald appearing, where was that from?
Matt Irvine's appearence might have been recorded by a Dr Who fan with a bit of inside knowledge.

I suspect all the Saturday Superstores are out there as offair VHS or Betamax recordings since fans of certain programmes or bands and singers would record whatever they appeared on. The only problem with that is, it's unlikely they'd had recorded whole shows. They lasted around 3 hours and 3 hour blank VHS tapes back then were not exactly cheap. Even I was Guilty of that practice in the mid 90's. I was a big fan of Pulp and recorded their many appearances on various shows, but would only record their sequences and not the complete shows since I felt it would be a waste of tape taping stuff I had no time for.
Dr Who fans seemed remarkably persistent and vigilant. Lots of these odd appearances and features survive only as offair recordings, some of which have been utilised on various DVD's since they're the only copies left.
Let's put it this way, though some shows may be missing from the BBC archive they do stand a higher chance of survival thanks to home video recorders. It always angers me that the mass wipings came to an end in 1978, the same year that domestic home video recorders finally became affordable. However as we've seen here on this forum, plenty still got wiped after 1978 so home recordings have ended up being the only existing copies.

The only surviving footage from this episode appears to be a couple of inserts used in the programme. A John Craven report on the Itaipu Dam (3m32s) and "specially shot footage of the build up and marriage of Maggie PHILBIN & Keith CHEGWIN" (17m06s). It's a similar story for most of the other missing episodes. Only the filmed inserts were kept. :-(

That's a real shame about only the inserts surviving which in the case of that particular edition was the least interesting bits for me. It's good anything survives but barely representative of that weeks show.
Another problem with Saturday Superstore and other such Saturday morning shows was they were effectively linking material for tired old cartoons and programmes. That was one of the strategies behind Swap Shop... the BBC couldn't convinced kids to watch those shows on their own, but plopped within a live format it did pull in viewers. It's like all that Children's BBC broom cupboard stuff... the BBC didn't bother keeping that material since it was linking material and therefore disposable. Childrens ITV likewise from what I can gather... I remember a few years ago an enquiry into Charlotte Coleman's links for Children's ITV in the character of Marmalade Atkins... all junked.
So in many ways these Saturday morning shows were treated similar to BBC News - the news programmes were mostly junked but the film inserts and reports retained... linking material obviously not deemed "important" enough... same with the 1969 Moon landing material.

It's lucky I kept some CBBC links from 1989-90, though I did read somewhere that since 1987 the BBC has kept duty logs on domestic formats.

Do you remember one summer evening in the 1970's the BBC showed an entire repeat of Swap Shop but with all the cartoons cut out? I seem to recall we were away on holiday at the time.
I just looked it up: part of a season called "Festival 77" and screened on BBC2 on August 25, 1977. With the edits it only lasted 80 minutes ;D
The problem with VHS is that collections of tapes are being binned on a daily basis. I wonder what percentage of people who had a collection still have the tapes or transferred them?
