Query - I recall comedy writer Lance Percival appearing on a regular BBC Saturday night slot 1967 - 70 period, with a spanish guitar doing satirical songs in a calypso style. I wondered what these were, and if the shows exist?

He used to do a topical calypso regularly in "That Was The Week That Was" for one, however he also had his own shows "Lance at Large" (a sitcom) in 1964 and "The Lance Percival Show" in 1965 and 1966 (2 series) - the latter was a sketch/variety format, so I wouldn't be surprised if he did some calypsos in that - I haven't seen any myself, though the whole of the 1966 series does still exist. The 65 series and "Lance at Large" don't exist, other than a short clip of the latter.

The UCLA has one of these shows. Any idea if it's officially missing?

He did, of course, have a solo UK hit with "Shame and scandal in the family".

The UCLA has one of these shows. Any idea if it's officially missing? Not without knowing which episode it is that they have - any details such as guest stars etc should enable me to track it down.

That's the first episode of series 2, which does exist at the BBC.

He did, of course, have a solo UK hit with "Shame and scandal in the family". He certainly did. Great skit it is too! I have it on the MFP tape, "One Hit Wonders of the Sixties". Obviously his other single wasn't... "End of the Season" (writer: R. Davies --- Ray of the Kinks? Dunno, sounds like his style) coupled with "Our Jim" - a satirical song about an actor and his 'principles' - I have that on the 7" single, again from 1966 like "Shame".

There was a run of commercials for the TVTimes that he did in the calypso style as well. The main line was "The TVTimes for 20p - it's got all the details of ITV!"

Ah ... makes you wonder why he was never considered for poet laureate, instead of all that John Bitumen stuff

If I recall correctly, an edition of Telly Addicts showed a clip from "The Lance Percival Show" which featured Lance singing a calypso with Jon Pertwee. And to the poster who asked, yes Lance is still around!
