Another near miss is the NZ Marco Polo censor clips.. junked just before the others were discovered in 1996.. the censor clips were to be kept for 30 years then disposed of.. so the MP ons presumably went in 1994. were any others missed?

That was a great pity. I wonder what action the clips in question would have shown? Anyone got an idea?

sorry - thought the links worked - just go to www.naa.gov.au/click on search the collection - then click on search as a guest and enter "doctor who" then go to the last page ( records 161 to 175 )

Pity. I'm guessing the "10 second" durations were a default for less than that duration?

Follow the series link in the records (c3057) & it states that they consist of film rolled on cores and stored in polythene bags - very misleading if this is only copies of paperwork & not the physical film.
With a date of last November on these records it wasn't unfeasible that the clips were relocated after they had originally been assumed to be destroyed.

Whoever compiled the archive entry just took it at face value that all the extracts as described on the paperwork were held on one roll, and thus made a generic entry on the database that all cuts were 10 seconds. (Compare each of the DW entries with those for, say, The Avengers and The Goodies, where you'll see more detailed descriptions and durations logged in.)

Cyprus 1974: The Reign of Terror 4 & 5 destroyed in Turkish Invasion I believe that this was a failed military coup by Greek insurgents against their own Greek government shortly before the Turkish Invasion.

I seem to remember that Mr Shanahan said that the censor clips he found were rolls kept in a shoe box in a back room and that the other staff there were amazed that these things were still there. I wonder how organised the NZBC were to have someone systematically tracking down these censor clips and disposing of them 30 years on the dot. And not just 'Who' clips either.

Nothing to do with the NZBC (New Zealand) - it was the ABC and the Australian Film Censorship Board who put retain orders on the cuts. At my work, files that had a 'destroy after 7 years' on them had a destruction date written on them in black marker, and they were filed on a shelf. Every six months or so, we'd go to the file room and chuck out all the boxes that had a destruction date that had been and gone. Simple. No doubt the censor film boxes were marked in a similar way.
